Trump Reading Room aka the Outhouse HICKORY "Reel Life"

Let's have a look at how some see Don (the Con) Trump's "deplorables"...
...in this never-reprinted tale from Quality's Hickory #6 (1949)
Illustrated (and probably written) by Harry Sahle, this comic series began in the anthology All-Humor Comics, then spun-off into it's own, short-lived, title when All-Humor was cancelled.
In 1948-49, superheroes were all but kaput.
Comics were experimenting with every genre imaginable to see what would sell.
Li'l Abner was a major success in newspapers and had already spawned a radio series and feature film!
Strips like Looie Lazybones had long been a part of anthology titles, and series like Ozark Ike, and Babe had earned their own titles, though it was probably due more to their emphasis on the characters' involvement in sports than their rural origins.
Hickory, the comic, only lasted six issues.

Holiday Reading Room EASTER WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Humpty Dumpty"

A new, Easter-themed variation on a classic nursery rhyme...
... courtesy of writer/artist Walt (Pogo) Kelly!
This never-reprinted short from Dell's Four Color Comics: Easter with Mother Goose #185 (1948) expands on the nursery rhyme with a new adventure of the accident-prone ovum.
Walt Kelly also used Humpty in other Mother Goose comic stories.
Oddly, the cover, also by Walt Kelly, features a radically-different version of Humpty...
Weird, eh?

Reading Room BLACK MAGIC "Way Out!"

From the final issue (#50 from 1961) of Prize's Black Magic...
..is a never-reprinted tale that might seem familiar to EC Comics fans!
Compare the last page to the last page below...

Did Black Magic editor Joe Simon swipe the Bill Gaines/Al Feldstein script for this tale, "Round Trip" from EC's Weird Science-Fantasy #28 (1955)?
Or was he given the script by a lazy writer who hoped he didn't recognize it?
We'll never know...

Reading Room BLACK MAGIC "Black Fog"

A never-reprinted 1960s Steve Ditko story is, literally, a buried treasure...
...and this long-unseen tale from Prize's Black Magic #47 (1961) has just been uncovered for your enjoyment!
Considering this is Ditko's only Prize Comics work since the pre-Comics Code days when he assisted in the Simon & Kirby studio, some speculate it was a rejected Charlton story that was "shopped around" to other publishers.
If that's the case, the unidentified writer is more than likely Joe Gill, who wrote almost all Ditko's stories at Charlton during this period.
