Happy 50th Anniversary, Apollo 11!

In the 1940s (and before), we dreamed of meeting (and battling) aliens on the Moon...
...In the 1950s, we feared meeting (and battling) Commies on the Moon...
...when we actually got to the Moon in 1969, thankfully, there was nothing to fear (or fight)!
Happy 50th Anniversary!

Friday Fun RACE FOR THE MOON "Lunar Trap"

In tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon...
...we present a change-of-pace tale from the 1950s, when we thought we'd be fighting with the Soviet Union over control of the Moon...
This tale from Harvey's Race for the Moon #2 (1958) features a fierce, fighting, female cosmonaut...extremely progressive for the time!
Pencils by Jack Kirby, inks by Al Williamson (who, along with fellow EC alumnus Reed Crandall, was doing a lot of work for Harvey at the time)!
Not sure who wrote it, but speculation is that Kirby himself scripted it.
Either way, a decent story with solid storytelling and magnificent rendering!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder JOHN CARTER "Secret Diaries of John Carter"

Because we've had complaints about the Fist of God stories...
...we've dropped the series and are, instead, re-presenting the never-reprinted "Secret Diaries of John Carter" high-adventure series that ran in DC Comics' Tarzan Family in 1976!
There are a couple of inconsistencies with the established John Carter/Burroughs Universe canon.
The Myposans are actually a Venusian race from Burroughs' Carson of Venus series which we ran last year!
The girl should be red-skinned or pale white, not Caucasian-flesh colored.
It's not clearly-stated when this story takes place, but because Carter is still wearing his Earth-produced pants, it's implied that it's shortly after he arrives on Mars.
(The Comics Code didn't allow him to show up stark naked on Barsoom!)

This all-new tale from Tarzan Family #62 (1976) was written by Bob Kanigher, penciled by Noly Zamora and inked by Vicatan,  but several panels were obviously re-drawn by editor Joe Kubert.
As we mentioned earlier, this series has never been reprinted since it's publication in 1976, even in the Dark Horse trade paperback that presented all the other John Carter stories that appeared in Tarzan and Weird Worlds!

Monday Madness ALICE "StoryTeller: Upside Down Day"

There were other strips besides Alice and Tweedle Twins in Ziff-Davis'Alice...
...including this one which was probably intended as an ongoing backup feature!
Writer-artist Dave Berg apparently offered several strips as backup features for this title as well as its' brother title; Ziff-Davis' Fairy Tales, as you'll see next Monday!
