Friday Fun FAIRY TALES "Gingerbread Boy"

Finishing off the last of my delicious Christmas gingerbread cookies while sitting at the computer...

...inspired me to run this never-reprinted story from Ziff-Davis' Fairy Tales #11 (1951).
Note: the cover contains a spoiler!

This is not so much a fairy tale as a folk tale or fable.

In most versions it's a fox who carries the Gingerbread Boy across the river and devours him!

The comic strip's art is by Leon Winik, who probably also did the cover, which matches the third panel on the final page above perfectly!

Monday Madness FAIRY TALES "Belling the Cat" "Boy Who Cried Wolf!" "Lion and the Mouse"

A trio of never-reprinted one-pagers complete our Fairy Tales presentation...for now!

A short based on the classic folktale rendered in a very Walt Kelly-esque style from Ziff-Davis' Fairy Tales #11 (1951)!

Short but effective, this re-telling of the parable/fable, also from Fairy Tales #11, was the inside back cover feature, which is why it's b/w instead of four-color!

The inside front cover of Fairy Tales #10 (which is actually the first issue) presents an adaption of one of Aesop's Fables, not a "fairy tale", per se!

Fairy Tales will return in the first week of November.

But, beginning next Monday and running through October, we're running the never-seen-in-America Dracula humor strips from the original Spanish-language Dracula comic from 1971!

Note: the 12-issue magazine series was translated and reprinted in England, then the first 6 issues were packaged as a trade paperback by Warren (Creepy/Eerie/Vampirella) Publications!

But neither English-language version ran these one-pagers...despite the fact the strip is wordless!

Monday Madness FAIRY TALES "Wolf Boy"

Last time we presented a gingerbread boy...

...this time, it's another lad, but with a decidedly-different tone in this never-reprinted story from Ziff-Davis' Fairy Tales #10 (1951)!

Feral children are a common concept in folklore, and I was unable to find a published version that corresponded to this tale!

The strip's artist is unknown, but I see elements of Joe Kubert's work from this period, so while he didn't do the entire job, he probably helped whoever the primary artist(s) were!

It makes sense a comic called Fairy Tales would have a feature on fairies...

...although classifying witches as "bad fairies" seems to be stretching the concept to the breaking point!

From the inside cover of Ziff-Davis' Fairy Tales #11 (1951) comes this never-reprinted b/w feature by an anonymous writer/artist or writer and artist which raises more questions than it answers!

...without too much embellishment!

Both the writer and artist of this effective re-telling of the classic story from Fairy Tales #10 (1951) are unknown.
(And despite the issue number, this was the first issue of the book's too-short run!)

Monday Madness FAIRY TALES "David and the Dragon"

An updated version of Lewis Carroll's Alice wasn't Dave Berg's only foray into fantasy...

...there was also the cover feature for the first issue of Alice's Ziff-Davis Comics stable-mate, Fairy Tales!

(Yes, I know it says "#10", but it's the first issue!)

The "look" of this strip is totally-different from the other Ziff-Davis material by Berg we've presented.

But, keep in mind that Dave got his start working for the Eisner-Iger Studio in 1940.

One of the attributes they looked for in their artists was the ability to mimic other illustrators' styles...including Eisner's own!

It's possible he was instructed by editor Jerry Siegel to go for a "look" similar to Walt Kelly's on his successful and popular Dell Comics Fairy Tale Parade and Mother Goose stories!

But when he started work on Alice, Siegel let him go back to his "normal" look!
