Monday Mecha Madness SHOGUN WARRIORS "Five Heads of Doom!" Conclusion

...they were engaged in combat with a giant automaton hand whose fingers, like Combatra itself, can separate and battle independently, turning the whole area into a mecha demolition derby...
Mecha vs Mecha and the Military vs Everyone!
Plus: Who are the Men in Black?
(And no, they're not the ones in the later graphic novel and movie series!)
Find out in late June!

Monday Mecha Madness SHOGUN WARRIORS "Five Heads of Doom!" Part 1

...Radeen and Dangard Ace engaged in battle with simultaneous (but apparently-unrelated) menaces from outer space!
Now a new (and quite different menace) threatens the life of Genji Odashu, pilot of Combatra...
You'll See That Epic Attack Next Monday!
Today's entry in the never-reprinted Marvel adventures of the Shogun Warriors from #10 (1979) was scripted by Doug Moench, penciled by Herb Trimpe and inked by guest artist Steve Mitchell.
Note: because Moench & Trimpe onlya had the Mattel versions of the robots and didn't have access to the manga or anime detailing the Japanese versions' characters, back stories, and capabilities of the mecha, they basically made things up as they went!
In Combatra's case, the Japanese version featured five human pilots, each controlling one of the segments, which functioned best when combined, as shown in the video below!

The Marvel Comics version has only one human pilot, located in in the head, with the other four sections controlled by semi-independent Artificial Intelligences!

Reading Room MYSTERY IN SPACE "The Following Program is Pre-Recorded"

In this era of podcasts, which will be on the internet as long as the servers storing them operate...,
...such a tale as this might seem passe...except for the ending!
Appearing in the final issue (#117) of DC's Mystery in Space in 1981, written by B S Watson, penciled by Don Newton, and inked by Steve Mitchell, the story takes the "last man on Earth" scenario to an unbelievably-narcissistic level!
I mean, he's the last person alive and all he can think of doing is recording and transmitting himself?
Sad...

TIME WARP WEEK "Union in Steel"

Welcome to the finale of Time Warp Week...
...as we conclude our week-long look at DC's short-lived 1979-1980 sci-fi anthology.
Using both established pros and talented newcomers, this oversized anthology (68 pages for $1 when the standard comic was 36 pages for 40¢) presented all-new material, almost all of which (including this story) has never been reprinted!
The penciler on this tale, Don Newton, was one of the best of the fan-turned-pros of the 70s-80s.
Unfortunately, a heart attack cut his career and his life short and he passed in 1984.
BTW, most people don't realize he didn't break into comics until he was 40!
There's a really kool site dedicated to Don HERE.
Mike Kaluta, definitive artist for the comic version of The Shadow, provided pulp-style covers for the entire run.
While they had no relation to any of the stories in the book, they were spectacular!
