Reading Room: BRANT CRAIG "Legion of the Dead"

"In space, no one can hear you scream..."
...with a story of interplanetary terror that would frighten even the toughest hard-boiled dick in the galaxy.
This never-reprinted story from Youthful's Captain Science #4 (1951) was the only one with an overt "horror" theme added into the already-cross genre series, and was probably illustrated by Bill Molno.
The writer is unknown.
This completes our run of the never-reprinted adventures of space sleuth Brant Craig.

Reading Room: BRANT CRAIG "Case of the Racing Grellama"

Some things never change...
...including cliched mysteries featuring private eyes, whether set in the 1930s/40s or the far future...
This never-reprinted "hard-boiled dick in space" story from Youthful's Fantastic #8 (1951) was probably illustrated by Bill Molno.
The writer is unknown.
BTW, Fantastic's first issue was #8.
The book is actually Captain Science retitled!
This is the final published tale of Brant Craig, but it's not the last one you'll see here!
There's one more, horror-themed, story we're saving for Halloween week.
Don't miss it!

Counterfeiting will always be a problem, even in the 30th Century...
...as we see in this never-reprinted tale from the final issue of Youthful's Captain Science!
This "hard-boiled private-eye in space" story from Youthful's Captain Science #7 (1951) was probably illustrated by Bill Molno and Rocco Mastroserio.
The writer is unknown.

Reading Room: BRANT CRAIG "Red Devils of Mars"

In the 1950s "Red" usually meant Communists...
...or a Communist-like threat, even in stories set in the future!
Add how the "Red" Martians set up an impenetrable "ionic curtain" (instead of Iron Curtain),  and the parallels are obvious to anyone.
This never-reprinted tale from Youthful's Captain Science #6 (1951) was probably illustrated by Bill Molno and Rocco Mastroserio.
The writer is unknown.

...as we blast-off for adventure in yet another alliteratively-titled tale of the interstellar investigator, Brant Craig!
This never-reprinted tale from Youthful's Captain Science #5 (1951) was probably illustrated by Bill Molno.
The writer is unknown.

Reading Room: BRANT CRAIG "Deadly Dwarfs of Deimos"

Why would a private-eye have an unlisted phone number!
...even if he's Brant Craig, Interplanetary Detective, and his device is a "space-o-phone"?
We never learned why Brant's "space-o-phone" is unlisted...
This never-reprinted tale from Youthful's Captain Science #3 (1951) was probably illustrated by Moe Marcus and Bill Molno.
The writer is unknown.

Reading Room: BRANT CRAIG "Space Pirates of Lanthus IV"

He's not the first "Interplanetary Detective"...
...that honor goes to Planet Comics' Fero (who went "inter"planetary in his second appearance)!
But Brant Craig was the longest-lasting, with seven appearances!
Yeah, let's not worry about the innocent spacemen who were just killed during this raid, or their families.
They're just collateral damage...
This never-reprinted premiere from Youthful's Captain Science #2 (1951) was probably illustrated by Bill Molno.
The writer is unknown.
Brant Craig continued through the remaining five issues of Captain Science.
When the book was re-titled Fantastic, Brant (and Captain Science) made their final bows in the first issue.
