Monday Madness CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Little Boy Blue and Little Girl Green

Here's another early example of a "mash-up"...
...putting existing nursery rhyme characters into a Christmas setting to create new tales!
Written and illustrated by Walt (Pogo) Kelly, this never-reprinted tale from the final Christmas with Mother Goose anthology (Dell's Four Color #253 [1949]) adds new characters that didn't exist in the nursery rhyme.

Monday Madness CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Miss Cross Patch on Christmas Eve"

Unlike this Goldilocks story, which adapted an existing fairy tale into an Easter setting...
...this is a classic nursery rhyme, greatly expanded and enhanced by Walt (Pogo) Kelly for Christmastime!
From Dell's Four Color Comics #253 aka Christmas with Mother Goose (1949), written and illustrated by Walt (Pogo) Kelly.
For the remainder of the holiday season, we'll present stories (many never-reprinted) from this oversized holiday annual which ran from 1945 through 1949 every Monday!

Holiday Reading Room SANTA CLAUS FUNNIES "Fir Tree"

Last year, we presented a religious-themed tale about the origin of Christmas trees...

...guest-starring the Christ Child Himself!
This one's a little more light-hearted!
Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, Walt (Pogo) Kelly both adapted the story and illustrated it for Dell's Santa Claus Funnies #1 (1942).

Friday Holiday Fun CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Christmas Alphabet"

Nobody did Christmas-themed comics better than the legendary Walt (Pogo) Kelly...
...as this never-reprinted piece from Dell's Four Color Comics #201 (1948), one of the annual Christmas with Mother Goose anthologies, proves!
Yeah, it is difficult to find something Yuletide-related that begins with "Z"...any suggestions?
Christmas with Mother Goose was an ongoing annual from 1945 through 49.
It apparently ended when Walt Kelly left Dell to work full-time on his new Pogo newspaper strip.
But Dell continued to do Yuletide annuals with a Frosty the Snowman series from 1951 to 1961 as well as continuing an already-ongoing line of Kris Kringle-themed Santa Claus Funnies running from 1944 through 1961!
(In early 1962 Dell Comics broke up into two companies, the already-established Dell, which had really just handled distribution, and Gold Key Comics, which had handled the editorial and art production chores, but not newsstand distribution.
This left Dell, which had to build a comics editorial division from scratch, without the resources to continue the Christmas-themed annuals.)

Monday Madness / Holiday Reading Room CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "3 Christmas Bears"

A Christmas-themed variation on a classic fairy tale...
...as told by Walt (Pogo) Kelly!
Told with charm and finesse, this never-reprinted tale from Dell's Four Color #253 (1949) aka Christmas with Mother Goose, was one of a number of already-existing stories Kelly wittily-modified to fit the Yuletide season.

never-reprinted Walt Kelly tale from Dell's Four Color #90 (1945) subtitled Christmas with Mother Goose, the first of the annual Yuletide anthologies that ran from 1945 to 1949 which utilized fairytale characters in X-Mas settings!

Holiday Reading Room SANTA CLAUS FUNNIES "Carolers"

Walt (Pogo) Kelly doesn't need captions or word balloons...
...to tell his story in this never-reprinted one-pager from Dell's Four Color Comics #91 (1945).
It's just red and black because it's on the inside back cover of the comic, which was printed with only two colors, instead of the usual four (CMYK) colors to save money.
And, if you're wondering why we're running Christmas-related material so early this year...why not?

Friday Fun CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Jeminy's Christmas"

From the fertile mind of Walt (Pogo) Kelly...
...a Christmas tale featuring several fairy tale characters and some Kelly originals!
Published in Dell's Four Color Comics #253 (1949), this Walt Kelly-written and illustrated story was part of the Christmas with Mother Goose anthologies that appeared annually in the Four Color series from 1945 to 1949.
Before his comic strip Pogo took off, Kelly did a prodigious amount of work for Dell in their humor and holiday titles, most of which has never been reprinted.
His work has a gentle whimsy perfect for reading to little children before bedtime.
We've run almost a dozen of his stories (mostly holiday stuff) which you can read by clicking HERE!
