Friday Fun / Trump Reading Room SAVAGE DRAGON

Didn't see any comics characters (and their creators) endorsing Don da Con at any time...

...but I did see them proudly endorsing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020...and will likely see them endorsing Kamala and whomever she selects as her running mate!
Wonder why?

Holiday Reading Room EVERY DAY'S A HOLLY DAY "Labor Day"

With at least two available jobs for every applicant who wants to work...
...the power of the worker has never been stronger!
Why is this 1955 comic entitled "Every Day's a Holly Day" instead of "Every Day's a Holiday"?
Because it was given away to kids by grocers who sold Holly Sugar!
Illustrated by John Rosenberger, it's a unique pamphlet covering a number of American holidays, including both Lincoln and Washington's Birthdays (before they were combined into "Presidents' Day" in 1962), Mothers' Day (though not Fathers' Day), Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and a couple of holidays we've largely abandoned...Pan-American Day and American Indian Day!
We'll be presenting the other chapters on the dates they fall upon.
Watch for them!
(BTW, Monday Madness will return next week...)

Holiday Reading Room EVERY DAY'S A HOLLY DAY "Thrilling Story Behind Old Glory: Flag Day"

In a patriotic fever while waiting for the 4th of July?
Learn About...
...and try to forget it's also (ironically) the 76th birthday of disgraced, twice-impeached, ex-President Don (the Con) Trump!
Coloring goof: the Union soldiers in panel 5 are wearing Confederate gray!
Why is this 1955 comic entitled "Every Day's a Holly Day" instead of "Every Day's a Holiday"?

Note: We're gearing up for our traditional multi-blog Summer Blogathons which we'll announce the week before the 4th of July weekend and begin the week after!

Friday Fun SNAFU "Understanding the Atom: Diagram of an Atom Bomb"

Considering Don da Con almost managed to stage a coup and gain total control of the government on Wednesday...
..we thought we'd offer this never-reprinted, easy-to-understand diagram of the weapon he's only one temper tantrum away from launching from #2 (1956) of Atlas/Marvel's short-lived 1950s MAD b/w magazine clone, SNAFU, written by Stan Lee and rendered by Joe Maneely.
Most of you are aware Marvel had a fairly-successful MAD clone in the 1970s-80s called CRAZY, but they also gave it a try back in the 1950s, with a three issue run!
#1
#2
#3
As you can see from the contents page of #2...
...the incredibly-versatile John Severin and Joe Maneely handled literally all the artwork for the series.
Also, Irving Forbush was their Alfred E Neuman / Sylvester P Smythe-type mascot, whose face was shown constantly.
Later versions of Irv in Not Brand EchhWhat Th--?, and other comics didn't show his face, and his "costume" as Forbush-Man included an all-concealing cooking pot with holes in it as a mask!
To date, none of the material from these very hard-to-find issues of Snafu has ever been reprinted, which is a pity, because it's pretty damn good!

Trump Reading Room / Friday...Fun? HELP! "Now, Just to Save Time..."

After watching last night's Triumph of the Will-type convention rally by Don da Con...
...do you really think this "humorously"-captioned pic from Warren's HELP! #26 (1965) isn't as relevant today as it was 55 years ago?
Be Afraid!
Be VERY afraid!

Trump Reading Room / CoronaVirus Comics CHAMBER OF DARKNESS "Day of the Red Death!"

...reminded me of an updated version of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of disease, "Masque of the Red Death"! Here's that updated  "adaptation", set present-day, which freely admits the source material!
In fact, out of the mouth of the legendary Stan (the Man) Lee himself...
A rich, uncaring guy who has the power to destroy the entire world and wouldn't hesitate to allow a plague to do so...as long as he was safe!
Now who does that remind us of?
Writer Roy Thomas had been a teacher before turning to writing/editing comics, and he loved utilizing classic literature in his work!
Don Heck, whose Marvel work was usually inked by others, apparently relished the opportunity to do both penciling and inking, as he had done in his 1950s horror and war comics work!
In addition, John Romita Sr turned in a wonderfully-rendered cover which was somewhat obscured by the black tints used to create "mood".
Look at the original art to see the detail you might've missed on the printed version...
Kool, eh?

Friday Fun / CoronaVirus Comics NELLIE THE NURSE "Busman's Holiday"

Before teen books like the Archie line dominated humor comics...
...there were...I suppose you'd call them..."young adult" humor comics like this one!
BTW, this opening panel's situation does not appear in the story...
In many ways, these comics are the screwball comedy b-movies / TV situation comedies of their era, as this never-reprinted tale from Timely's Nellie the Nurse #2 (1946) demonstrates!
Nellie had a healthy 36-issue run from 1945 to 1954.
She also popped up as a back-up feature in Willie Comics, Comedy Comics, and Millie the Model from time to time.
BTW, we mentioned Archie Comics earlier in this post.
When Nellie was revived in the late 1950s by Timely's successor, Atlas Comics, guess what style she was drawn in?
Saw that one coming, didn't ya?

Friday Fun / CoronaVirus Comics CEREBUS IN HELL "Super-Cerebus Vs. Covid-19"

Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark has been a comics standout since the late 1970s, running more than 300 issues...
Originally a parody of Roy Thomas & Barry Smith's Conan the Barbarianthe Cerebus comics stand out for their experimentation in both storytelling format and editorial content, often mirroring the creator's sometimes controversial beliefs.
The current on-line series Cerebus in Hell, is no different, mirroring the CoronaVirus pandemic and the US government response!
You can download the current chapter in PDF form (including this double-page spread), for free, HERE!
