Friday Fun SPACE MOUSE "Reservation to the Moon!"

Sometimes the heroic Space Mouse ventured into outer space to fight menaces...
...sometimes the menaces commuted to Earth!
And, sometimes, very rarely, there is no menace...just misunderstood alien visitors!
Writer/artist Frank Carin told this never-reprinted tale of misinterpreted Moon-people motives in Avon's Peter Rabbit #31 (1956)!

Friday Fun PETER RABBIT "Trouble on the Moon!"

As Artemis prepares to launch, we wanted to present a Moon-themed Space Mouse story...
but all we could find was this strip also by Space Mouse's writer/artist/animator Frank Carin!
This never-reprinted tale from Avon's Peter Rabbit #30 (1955-6) isn't based on the classic Peter Rabbit character created by Beatrix Potter.
Avon Comics had been running a comic since 1947 reprinting the similar Peter Cottontail newspaper strip by Harrison Cady (based on books by Thornton Burgess) under the name Peter Rabbit Comics.
Perhaps due to not wanting to pay to license the Harrison Cady strip, the series was rebooted with a totally-new, very Americanized, contemporary version of the character, as of #7 (1950), which continued until #34 (1956).

Space Hero Saturdays SPACE MOUSE "Beauty Contest!"

In the 1950s, both funny animals and sci-fi were popular comics genres...
...so, it was inevitable that someone would combine the two!
Though it is the cover-featured story in Avon's Space Mouse #1 (1954), "Beauty Contest", written and illutrated by Frank Cairn, is not the origin of the Rocketing Rodent.
That tale, "Atomic Attack", comes later in the book...and we've already presented it in Space Hero Saturdays, HERE.

Space Hero Saturdays SPACE MOUSE "Atomic Attack!"

Before the Space Mouse We've Already Re-Presented HERE and HERE...
...there was an earlier one whose adventures ran for several years!
And this is as close as you'll get to an origin for him featuring the introduction of equipment and plot elements that'll pop up over time in the series!
Oddly, this Frank Cairn-written and illustrated story was neither the lead nor the cover-featured tale in Avon's Space Mouse #1 (1953)!
Go figure!

Friday Fun FUNNY TUNES "Space Mouse in 'Mister Fix-It' " and "Peter Rabbit in 'Parking Space!' "

Let's get back to non-disease-oriented humor...
...with a decidedly Earth-bound Space Mouse one-pager...
...and an oddly space-bound Peter Rabbit short!
I'd say somebody gave the artist for these pieces from Avon's Funny Tunes #1 (1953) the wrong scripts...except the writer and artist are the same person...Frank Carin!

Friday Fun SPACE MOUSE "Land of the Giants!"

While the similarly-named 1960s-70s tv series had some "juvenile" (to put it politely) stories...
...they didn't even come close to being this silly!
So, the heroic Space Mouse just wanted to go somewhere and "make out" with his girlfriend?
Creator/writer/artist Frank Carin might want to reconsider the example this tale from Avon's Peter Rabbit #30 (1955-56) set for impressionable young children of the 1950s!

Friday Fun SPACE MOUSE "Genius at Work" & "Great Hero"

Besides the four-color stories in the book, the b/w inside covers were used for one-page features...
...although this first one, with its' vaudeville-level humor could've been used for any character...and probably previously had by writer-artist Frank Carin!
The second one shows something unusual in that Space Mouse apparently runs an interplanetary gas station in his spare time!
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
Both these never-reprinted one-pagers are from Avon's Space Mouse #1 (1953), which cover-features a different space beauty pageant story!
