Monday Holiday Madness PRESIDENTS' DAY...the Holiday that Combines TWO Presidents' Birthdays!

Before they combined Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays into a "floating" holiday...
...Washington's Birthday was always celebrated each year on Feb 22nd...
...and Lincoln's Birthday was always on February 12th!
Why the change?
USA Today has an explanation HERE!
Since this is a comics blog, let's get back on-topic!
These two features appeared in a 1956 comic called "Every Day's a Holly Day"
(No, it's not a typo...as you can see!)
Why was it called that instead of "Every Day's a Holiday"?
Because it was given away to kids by grocers who sold Holly Sugar!
Illustrated by John Rosenberger, it's a unique pamphlet covering a number of American holidays, including Mothers' Day (though not Fathers' Day), Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and a couple of holidays we've largely abandoned...Pan-American Day and American Indian Day!

Holiday Reading Room: EVERY DAY IS A HOLLY DAY: "Independence Day"

From 1956, here's a never-reprinted tale from a unique comic...
...produced to promote, of all things, sugar!
Why is the Brevity, Inc comic entitled "Every Day is a Holly Day" instead of "Every Day is a Holiday"?
Because it was given away to kids by grocers who sold Holly Sugar!
Illustrated by John Rosenberger, it's a unique pamphlet covering a number of American holidays, including both Lincoln and Washington's Birthdays (before they were combined into "Presidents' Day"), Mothers' Day (though not Fathers' Day), Flag Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, and a couple of holidays we've largely abandoned...Pan-American Day and American Indian Day!
We'll be presenting the other chapters on the dates they fall upon.
Watch for them!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder WALKING DEAD ZOMBIE SPECIAL "Dead Mass"

We've reached the finale of the original Walking Dead series...

...but keep reading!
There's more to see after this surreal tale!
The final tale by Walking Dead's creator/writer/artist Jim Somerville went into realms inconceivable in the original science fiction-themed story (as shown HERE)!
Somerville went on to other projects, including series based on the Alien and Predator movies at Dark Horse, but Aircel wasn't through with zombies..specifically these zombies!
A year later, they ran a sequel series...
...which didn't specifically state it was a sequel, but did follow up on the original Walking Dead's premise by introducing the two alien races whose space battle resulted in the crashed starship whose cargo created the zombies!
It also introduced a concept so over the top, that we can't present the series here!
But, if there's a demand for it, we'll run in in our adults-only blog Not Safe for Work Comics!
What say you?

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder WALKING DEAD ZOMBIE SPECIAL "Dead or Dead" Conclusion

When Last We Left the Sheriff in the Zombie Apocalypse...

...again, not that sheriff, but a delusional teenager who perceives zombies and threatening humans (like bikers) as classic Western baddies, thus explaining the story's title which is a riff on the old-style wanted poster caption of "Dead or Alive"!
There's one more never-reprinted tale of the original Walking Dead, and you'll see it here...
Next Wednesday...
along with info about an unauthorized sequel from the same publisher!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder WALKING DEAD ZOMBIE SPECIAL "Dead or Dead" Part 1

Besides the characters in the plotline of the four issue mini-series...

...a one-shot Walking Dead Zombie Special in 1990 featured this tale of other humans battling zombies...and each other!
"Sheriff" Scav's mental "coping mechanism" of perceiving threatening enemies as classic Western villains might just get him killed!
Find out if he survives...

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder WALKING DEAD "Beginning of the End" Conclusion

When Last We Left the Former Law-Enforcement Officer Battling Zombies in a Post-Apocalyptic World...

...no!
Not that LEO..

...this LEO!
Mortally-wounded Sgt Joe Barker faces off with zombie leader (Yes, the zombies in this universe have a leader!) Jak...

The final scene of the final issue of Aircel's Walking Dead (#4 in 1990) truly defines "apocalyptic" as everyone (live and undead) is now kaput!
There are two more short tales involving different groups of characters than the main series.
You'll see them over the next few weeks.
Created by writer/artist Jim Somerville and published by Malibu/Aircel in 1989, it was vastly-different from the 2003-present graphic novel series created by writer Robert Kirkman, and artists Tony Moore & Charles Adlard..
For collectors, there's good news and bad news...
Good news: There's only a four-issue mini series and a one-shot Special to collect!
Bad news: Because it didn't sell well (and has never been reprinted), it's HTF (hard to find) and expensive!
