Space Hero Saturdays THE SPACEHAWK "...and the Lost Tribe of Mercury!"

You'll note that, this time around, our hero is called The Spacehawk...

...perhaps because writer/artist Basil Wolverton is trying to give him a "frightening-to-criminals" vibe like The Batman or The Shadow...

This tale from Novelty's Target Comics V1N6 (1940) offers up some fascinating concepts!
Was Spacehawk flesh-and-blood...or a robot/android?
Otherwise, how could he pull off such superhuman feats?
If you return in two weels, you'll find out his startling secret!
In the meantime, a different Space Hero will thrill you with an astounding astral adventure...

Friday Holiday Fun EASTER WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Easter Egg Hunt with Mother Goose"

Here's a never-reprinted example of Walt (Pogo) Kelly's superb art (and puzzle-creating skills)...
...from Dell's Four Color Comics: Easter with Mother Goose #220 (1949)!
Imagine getting one of these 52-page annuals in your Easter basket along with jellybeans, chocolate bunnies and marshmallow Peeps!
Several 7-10 page stories, a number of 1-2 page features, games, and, usually, a wraparound cover!
Would've kept the 5-8 year-old me occupied in those dark days before TV (much less the Internet)!

Reading Room LEFTY FLYNN "and the Diamond Death"

Take me OUT at the ball game...
Who knew baseball could be such a violent sport?
No, you won't!
This never-reprinted story from S&S's Doc Savage Comics V1N4 (1941) was Lefty's first, last, and only appearance anywhere!
Both the writer and artist of this one-shot strip are unknown.

With the baseball season delayed due to the owners' lockout of the players, I just had the urge to re-post this tale from a far more innocent time, so here it is!
Enjoy!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder ATARI FORCE Part Two "Chapter One: BERSERK"

...that was pretty succinct, eh?
Now let's eavesdrop on the woman in black (or dark burgundy, depending on your interpretation of her color scheme)...
Note Dr Singh's "deer in the headlights" look.
It's going to play a critical part in the story when you return...

Reading Room LOST WORLDS "Outlaws of Space"

Some say space operas are just Westerns with rayguns instead of six-shooters...
...and here's a story that plays with those cliches, even down to the characters mentioning the parallels!
While we don't know who wrote this never-reprinted story from Standard's short-lived sci-fi anthology Lost Worlds #6 (1952), the art is by Alex Toth (pencils) and Al Rubano (inks).

Monday Madness: How Repugs Think We Can Fight Russkies in the Ukraine!

I'd say they read these comics as kids...
#2 (1953) Art by Jim McLaughlin
...presuming they could actually read!
#3 (1953) Art by an unknown illustrator
Click on the links to our "brother" RetroBlog War: Past, Present & Future...and read about...
&
...which were two different 1950s series with two different plotlines and histories of the same potential future (the 1960s) from the same publisher!
