Space Force Saturdays SPEED CARTER "Who Stole the Sun?"

If you think it's cold now, read about what happens...
...when the sun is hijacked in this never-reprinted tale from Atlas' Speed Carter: SpaceMan #2 (1953)!
A "Giant Gravity Magnet" that looks like a big horseshoe magnet?
And, if you destroy the magnet which was towing the Sun (without at least turning it around to head back where it came from), the Sun will continue, unabated, in whatever direction it was going!
With all due respect, Hank and Joe, this was not your finest hour.
The series continues to play up the Saturnians as the future equivalent of the Chinese Communists of the 1950s
Written (as are all the Speed Carter stories) by Hank Chapman and illustrated by Joe Maneely.

Holiday Reading Room SPACE ADVENTURES "Mummers from Mercury"

Over 6 decades ago, the world almost ended on New Year's Day...
...but it was saved by the participants of the annual Mummers Parade!
This never-reprinted story from Charlton's Space Adventures #1 (1953) was illustrated by Albert Tyler and Dick Giordano.
The writer (who was probably from Philadelphia) is unknown.

The Mummers Parade is usually-held every New Years Day in Philadelphia.
Mummers tradition dates back to 400 BC and the Roman Festival of Saturnalias where Latin laborers marched in masks throughout the day of satire and gift exchange.
This included Celtic variations of “trick-or-treat” and Druidic noise-making to drive away demons for the new year.

Reports of rowdy groups “parading” on New Years day in Philadelphia date back before the revolution.
Prizes were offered by merchants in the late 1800s.
January 1, 1901 was the first “official” parade offered about $1,725 in prize money from the city.
January 1, 2021 was the 120th Anniversary of the event, but, due to the pandemic, it's been cancelled.
Let's hope no aliens take advantage of it and invade...

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "From the Past...Hope!"

...to change the odds for Hunt Bowman and Lyssa as they fight legions of VoltaMen to free future Earth from alien domination!
Bruce's VoltaMan body is a strategic asset beyond their wildest expectations, as the new allies will soon discover!
Spoiler: you can discover why by looking HERE!
Though Lily Renee is the primary artist on this never-reprinted tale from Fiction House's Planet Comics #36 (1945), there's some retouching, mostly on the new characters' faces, which appears to be the work of Eisner/Iger Studio head Will Eisner himself!

Monday Madness WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Day of Doom"

It's Monday, which many of us considered, pre-coronavirus, to be the...
But we didn't mean the phrase quite as literally as this apocalyptic tale which...well, read for yourself...

Talk about "everything but the kitchen sink"!
Us vs Commies!
Commies vs Aliens!
Aliens vs Us!
Evacuation of the Earth!
Destruction of the Moon!
Finally, to top it all off...Atlantis Rising!
And all that in only seven pages!

This story from Key's Weird Tales of the Future #4 (1952) could, with a little updating, make a helluva feature film or TV mini-series!
While the writer is unknown, the artist was Tony Mortellaro, who did hundreds of tales in various genres for Key and Atlas/Marvel, (where he became Associate Art Director under John Romita in the 1970s).

Space Force Saturdays on Sunday SPACE SQUADRON "Armada of Death"

We had to move our Space Force Saturdays presentation to Sunday...
...since we were retelling Marvel's version of the Birth of Christ, and didn't want to interrupt it!
As long as we're here, let's go back to the year 2000, when Americans controlled the Solar System, and protected it from aliens...extraterrestrials, not people from other countries on Earth!
This never-reprinted tale from Atlas' Space Squadron #2 (1951) is typical of the early 1950s, when sci-fi was dominated by various military and police organizations patrolling and controlling the universe, much as America was patrolling and controlling the non-Commie-controlled parts of Earth.
The illustrator, who became the regular artist, was Werner Roth.
Sadly, the writer is unknown,
