Jackie Robinson Comics Covers

With Spring Training for Baseball Season in Full Swing...

...here's a bunch of serious collectibles!
Not baseball cards, but baseball comics!

These are the covers of the never-reprinted series that ran from 1949 to 1952 about the exploits of legendary player Jackie Robinson!
Not only was he Rookie of the Year, National League MVP, National League Batting Champion, two-time National League Base-Stealing Champion, a six-time All-Star, and a Baseball Hall of Famer (as if that wasn't enough)...

...he was also the man who made history in 1947 as the first Black player in the major leagues!
He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1947 through 1956 before retiring due to the effects of diabetes on his performance.

During that period, this series from Fawcett Comics came out each summer and fall from 1949 through 1952.
Besides being sold in newsstands and candy stores, it was also sold at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn where the Dodgers played home games.
Trivia: Babe Ruth was the only baseball player to have a longer-running comic than Robinson, but his mag, Babe Ruth Sports Comics was an anthology covering numerous sports with Babe himself appearing in only one story per issue for 11 issues!
There was a 1950 movie about Jackie, The Jackie Robinson Story, where he played himself (as an adult)!
In 2013, Chadwick (Black Panther) Boseman superbly-portrayed Jackie in the movie 42: the Jackie Robinson Story!
To this day, Jackie Robinson is remembered as one of the greatest players in baseball history!

Monday Madness REAL FACT COMICS "Rookie of the Year" & PICTURE NEWS "California Flash"

For the past few weeks, we presented a fictional tale about a ballplayer facing prejudice...
...today, it's the "real deal" with the guy who broke the racial barrier in Major League Baseball!
The story from DC's Real Fact Comics #14 (1948) presents the story in a straightforward, if slightly patronizing, manner.
The following tale from Parents Magazine's Picture News #4 (1946) by writer/artist Charles Wessel, predates his being called up to the majors.
Note it does contain a couple of racial stereotypes common to the era, and may be NSFW.
There was also an official Jackie Robinson comic book from major comics publisher Fawcett that lasted six issues (longer than most other comics based on real-life sports figures) from 1949-52.

Gone Too Soon...Chadwick Boseman 1976-2020

I didn't know he had cancer...
...and he didn't publicize the fact, preferring to perform and create memorable cinematic personas, both real and fictional.
As a Brooklyn boy born the year the Dodgers left town, I grew up with my dad (who hated the Yankees) telling the story of Jackie Robinson and the incredible guts he had in order to do what no Black man had done before!
When the movie 42 hit theaters, I rushed out to catch it, and see the tales my dad told me about (including some of the really-nasty, racist shit) brought to life.
Boseman's Jackie Robinson wasn't a pure, larger-than-life icon, but a guy who wanted to do something he loved, no matter what it took.
When he was cast as The Black Panther (and yes, I bought Fantastic Four #52 at my local candy store in 1966), I knew he'd have the physical prowess to make the character convincing on-screen, but wasn't sure he'd pull off the persona, not to mention the accent.
I shouldn't have worried.
He was great!
Now he's gone.

JACKIE ROBINSON "Baseball Hero" Conclusion

Despite enduring pressure and situations that would've caused a lesser man to falter and give up, Jackie Robinson not only endures, but prospers!
His undeniable talent and skills begin to win over foes on and off the baseball diamond and an even greater joy awaits him at home...
Bonus: An ad from the comic promoting Jackie Robinson licensed products...
Imagine the reaction of racists who saw white kids wearing those items!
Written by Charles Dexter, and illustrated by an unknown artist (whom I suspect was Wayne [Superman] Boring), this book-length tale from Fawcett's Jackie Robinson (1949) detailed his life and career up to mid-1949, so it doesn't cover the even greater achievements yet to come...
Intended as a one-shot, it sold so well that it went to a bi-monthly series the next summer!
We're finishing the interrupted serialization this week in tribute to the legendary baseball player's 100th birthday!

JACKIE ROBINSON "Baseball Hero" Part 2

...After demonstrating amazing athletic skills in multiple sports in high school and college (UCLA), Jackie Robinson began playing baseball in the Negro League for the Kansas City Monarchs, where his prowess caught the eye of a scout for the Brooklyn Dodgers!
Jackie was assigned to the Dodgers' International League farm team the Montreal Royals, just one step below the major leagues.
But the first Black player in the previously all-White professional leagues was about to discover the path to the majors was destined to be a rocky one...
Written by Charles Dexter, and illustrated by an unknown artist, this book-length tale from Fawcett's Jackie Robinson (1949) detailed his life and career up to mid-1949.
