Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "The Coming Storm"

...they were making a jaunt across the country, attempting to link various surviving groups of humans into a unified fighting force against the invading VoltaMen...
Note the opening paragraph mentions it's 1975, so the invasion had to be sometime between 1946 (the then-present) and the late 1960s!
I had believed it was half a century to a century after the invasion due to the decay shown...
That was a tsunami (or tidal wave), not a hurricane!
A hurricane is a large storm system that forms in the atmosphere over warm ocean water. A tsunami is large set of waves triggered by some sort of vertical movement of rocks under water (earthquake, large landslide, volcanic explosion).
Between this and the mis-identified dinosaur in the previous story, I'm beginning to wonder if "Thorncliffe Herrick" passed high school science!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "Horrors of the Ancient Past!"

Did You Really Think a Series Called The Lost World...

...wouldn't produce at least one chapter featuring...well, read on and find out...
Note: this is not a diplodocus, which looked more like a brontosaurus!
It's clearly a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
At this point in history, The Lost World referred to a novel by Arthur Conan Doyle about his other famous character (besides Sherlock Holmes), Professor Challenger, discovering an isolated South American plateau where dinosaurs still existed!
It had already been adapted into a box office-smash hit silent film featuring stop-motion animation by Willis (King Kong) O'Brien, as well as a dramatic radio mini-series!
I'd be willing to bet that when new readers saw a blurb mentioning "Lost World" on the cover of Planet Comics, they thought the strip was an adaptation of the book (or movie)!
So the appearance of dinosaurs in this chapter from Fiction House's Planet Comics #41 (1946) was probably a tribute to those earlier works!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "Sinister Stalkers of the Subway"

...Hunt Bowman and his Scooby Gang exposed a traitorous human brainwashed by the VoltaMen before he could lead them into a trap...
Both artist Lily Renee and whoever the writer was behind the "Thorncliffe Herrick" pen-name lived in NYC.
So, they were aware of the 9th Avenue elevated train (which had recently-closed and was in the process of being dismantled), when this story from Fiction House's Planet Comics #40 (1946) was created and published.
In addition, this was the last appearance of the "Scooby Gang", as new assistants come and go for the remainder of the series!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "Among Us Walks...a Traitor!"

...Spoiler...the guy in the blue robe is the traitor!
(Guess the shadow gives him away...)

Bet you thought "Juggernaut" was just the name of an iconic Marvel super-villain!
In the14th century, Franciscan missionary Friar Odoric brought to Europe the story of an enormous carriage that carried an image of the Hindu god Vishnu (whose title was Jagannath, literally, "lord of the world") through the streets of India in religious processions.
Odoric reported that some worshippers deliberately allowed themselves to be crushed beneath the vehicle's wheels as a sacrifice to Vishnu.
That story was probably an exaggeration (or misinterpretation) of actual events, but it spread throughout Europe anyway.
By the 19th century, Europeans were using "juggernaut" to refer to any massive vehicle or any other enormous entity with powerful crushing capabilities!
Though it's often been used, along with "blitzkrieg", in historical texts and pop culture to describe the Nazi army's tactics during World War II, it is not a German word!
(But it sure sounds like should be...)
Who says comics ain't educational?

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder LOST WORLD "Wolf in the Fold"

It's the End of the World, and a scrappy bunch of freedom fighters battle alien invaders...

...but don't worry, the story itself will explain what you need to know!
Will Frok destroy Hunt, Lyssa, and their Scooby Gang?
Or will the inept alien kill himself?
And, has Bruce learned archery (presuming Hunt made a bow for him)?
The Answers to Some of These Questions Will be Found...
