Reading Room WORLD OF SUSPENSE "Mechanical Man!"

As artificial intelligence advances into almost every aspect of daily life...

...let see how the creatives of the 1950s envisioned how it might occur!
Yes, it's the "It was all a dream!" cliche!
The writer of this never-reprinted tale from Atlas' World of Suspense #1 (1956) is unknown, so we can't directly heap scorn upon him for using such a timeworn trope to get out of his own plotting without really solving it!
OTOH, artist Chuck Miller, who broke into comics illustrating a single story before being drafted, then returned after the war to work steadily until the industry almost collapsed in the mid-1950s due to the "Seduction of the Innocent" debacle, does a commendable job with what he's given to work with!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder SILVER SURFER: THE ULTIMATE COSMIC EXPERIENCE Part 2

The Silver Surfer directs the ever-hungry god-like being called Galactus to a world filled with life-energy...as well as teeming with sentient life!
The world is...Earth!
The sentient life...human beings!
But, after observing humans close-up (instead of from orbit), the Herald of Galactus comes to the conclusion that allowing the Planet Devourer to wipe them out to sustain himself is wrong, and attempts to convince his master to let him find an alternate world to ingest and leave Earth and its' inhabitants intact.
Galactus refuses...
As our tale diverges in an entirely-new direction from the saga of the Silver Surfer as we know it in the Marvel Universe, we bid you adieu, dear reader, until next Wednesday...

Celebrate D-Day...by Reading Comics/Graphic Novels!

It's the anniversary of D-Day, when the Allies, led by America, invaded Fortress Europa...
...and we at Atomic Kommie Comics had our "brother-in-arms" RetroBlog War: Past Present and Future post numerous graphic tales of that epic day, beginning with Marvel's Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos hitting the beach on D-Day!
Yes, it was reprinted in a Marvel Masterworks over a decade ago, but those are extremely-expensive and didn't sell very well, so most of you have never seen this tale from over a half century ago!
It was really crowded at Normandy on June 6th, 1944 since Blackhawk and his team were also there, so it's only fair we present their never-reprinted D-Day adventure...which also doubles as their previously-unrevealed origin...at Hero Histories!
The EC Comics crew, best known for sci-fi and horror, also did a story about D-Day...by three ex-military personnel as seen HERE!
And one of their crew, who served in the Merchant Marine before becoming a paratrooper, did this tale  about our paratroopers on D-Day...
We here at the "parent" RetroBlog joined in with both a brief three-pager...
...and a multi-part retelling courtesy of Gilberton, the publisher behind Classics Illustrated and World Around Us!
Enjoy, and if you have a friend or family member who's a D-Day veteran, tell him "Thank You" for us!

Monday Mars Madness MARS ATTACKS "Prologue"

For June and July, we're returning to the Red Planet...
...with the first (and never-reprinted) comics based on the legendary trading card set!
Card art by Wally Wood, Bob Powell, and Norman Saunders
To Be Continued
NEXT MONDAY!

Written by Mario A Bruni and Bruce Spaulding Fuller and illustrated by Greg Capullo, each issue of the mini-comic (3"x4.5", the size of the actual trading cards) told the story of a particular card, in this case, #1 "The Invasion Begins"!
Note: with the exception of the cover and first page, the scans above are of two-page spreads which actually makes their original image size 6"x4.5"!
The comics were issued two issues at a time in the same sort of boxes the original trading cards came in.
Sadly, only four issues in two box sets came out before the project ended.
Both the writers were contributors to Gore Shriek, which still exists on the 'Net!
Artist Greg Capullo has gone on to a long career at Marvel, Image, and DC.

It's Pride Month...

...and we believe everyone (except villains) should be welcome in the multiverse!
So, since there are now numerous LGBTQ+ characters and stories in almost every genre of Movie/TV/Graphic storytelling...
...we're going to be presenting (and linking to) a number of them in various RetroBlogs during June!
(For the prurient among you, everything will be PG-13)
Starting this week, you'll find stories at
on Wednesdays for the entire month!
And we'll inform you of where else in the RetroBlogs multiverse you'll see more tales...
