Friday Fun NUTS! "Comics is Wonderful!"

We keep telling you "comics can be educational"!
This feature, though it looks like it, is not an example of that!
How "meta" can you get?
A comic that spoofs other comics' genres!
This feature illustrated by Hy Fleishman from Premier Magazine's Nuts! #4 (1954) demonstrates the quality this undeservedly-obscure, short-lived (1953-1956) company gave to the titles in its' multi-genre lineup!

Reading Room VENUS COMICS "Thru the Lens"

Now this is how you tell a story in four pages...
...as demonstrated by artist Joe Maneely, a talent who died long before his time, and an unknown writer.
Who knew the world could end so...simply?
BTW, did you note the alien astronomer got it wrong?
Our planet blew up, not our sun!
If I was his boss, I'd fire him!
Originally-published in Atlas' Venus Comics #16 (1951), the tale was reprinted in the back of Marvel's X-Men #88 (1974), while the book was a reprint title, about a year before its' resurrection as the All-New X-Men!
So, the odds are that you, dear reader, have never seen it before!
And that, is what this blog is all about, showing you "lost" treasures!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder IRONJAW "Saga of IronJaw!" Conclusion

When Last We Left the Embodiment of Toxic Masculinity...

...sometime in a post-apocalyptic future, the barbarian known as IronJaw rescues a woman from a group of soldiers, slaughtering almost the entire squad!
But it's not due to altruism or s sense of justice, but simply horniness!
So while he indulges his lust, the unit's sole survivor reports to the king about their attacker...and the birthmark he bore which indicates the barbarian is, in fact, the supposedly-dead heir to the throne!
The current usurpers aren't happy with the news and order IronJaw captured ASAP...
This never-reprinted tale from Atlas/Seaboard's IronJaw #1 (1975) actually serves as a decent example of "world-building from scratch".
And, the writer intended the lead character to be a real asshole...

To say writer Michael Fleisher was "politically-incorrect" long before the phrase was coined is putting it mildly!
If you really want to take a look at how polarizing the guy was in the comics/sci-fi community, click HERE!
Warning: it ain't for the faint-hearted!
BTW, Fleisher ended up scripting extended runs of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian color comic and the Savage Sword of Conan b/w magazine from 1981 through 1985 as well as Marvel's comic adaptations of both the Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan movies!

Reading Room LOST WORLDS "First Man to Reach the Moon"

In this 1952 tale, Mankind doesn't reach the Moon until 2021!
For the record, most sci-fi stories of the era show a manned Moon landing occurring by 2000!
While we don't know who wrote this story from Standard's sci-fi anthology Lost Worlds #6 (1952), the illustrations are by Art Saaf, a steady contributor to comic books from the beginning of the Golden Age to the end of the Bronze Age (1940-1980).

Monday Madness ALARMING TALES "I Want to Be a Man!"

Following up on yesterday's guest-post about artificial intelligence...

...is this little tale about an AI who aspires to be more than mere machine!
Written and penciled by Jack (King) Kirby and inked by Kirby with Simon & Kirby Studios partner Joe Simon, this story from Harvey's Alarming Tales #2 (1957), this short feature would be quite different if done today, since miniaturization would enable David to put FABIAC in a human-sized form with close-to-human features...as Kirby himself did with X-51 aka Aaron Stack aka Mr Machine aka Machine Man 20 years later!
