Holiday Reading Room RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER "Who He Is and How He Came to Be!"

Much as Disney's versions of classic fairy tales have become the "accepted" ones...
...the 1964 stop-motion animated TV special of Rudolph is the one everyone knows.
But, this is the real story...
Next Tuesday:
Written by Robert L May and illustrated by Denver Gillen, this beloved tale was actually an advertising promotion designed to lure customers into doing Christmas shopping!
True!
You can read about it HERE!

Monday Madness WIZARD OF OZ Part 3

Dorothy Gale inadvertently crushes an evil witch with her house when it (and her) are transported by a tornado to a faraway land called "Oz".
The girl from Kansas is told that she must visit the Wizard who lives in the Emerald City, for he is the only one with the power to return her home!
Following the Yellow Brick Road (which goes directly to the green metropolis), she encounters three strange (but friendly) beings who agree to accompany her.
Overcoming dangerous obstacles, the group reaches the city...and an audience with the awesome Wizard!
Proclaiming he can return Dorothy home, Oz (as the Wizard calls himself) demands that she slay the Wicked Witch of the West or he won't aid the girl from Kansas.
Next Monday:
Return to the Emerald City...and Home?
This never-reprinted book adaptation from Dell Junior Treasury #5 (1956) was scripted by Gaylord DuBois and illustrated by Mel Crawford.

A Star Wars Christmas is coming...

...and what better way to celebrate than singing Christmas carols along with C3PO and R2D2?
Produced in 1980, this Christmas album was produced by Meco Monardo (who had previously recorded Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk).
Anthony Daniels voiced C-3PO and Ben Burtt provided the sound effects he created for Star Wars to bring R2-D2 and Chewbacca to life!
'What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)' reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1980. (It was the third digitally-recorded single in chart history.)
Trivia: Jon Bon Jovi made his first recording ever on this album (credited as John Bongiovi), singing lead vocals on 'R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas.' Bon Jovi did it as a favor to his cousin Tony Bongiovi, one of the producers of the album.

The Thanksgiving Turkey Cometh...

...and it's going to be tasty, indeed!

Perhaps the only Red Sonja-related comic to never be reprinted after its' initial publication, the adaptation of the 1985 movie was presented in two formats...
a magazine-sized Marvel Super Special, and a two-issue comic book-format mini-series.
As usual, we'll be presenting elements from both versions in our usual serialized format starting on Thanksgiving Day and running daily through Sunday through two RetroBlogs: Secret Sanctum of Captain Video and Heroines!
Don't Miss Them!

Friday Fun CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Little Boy Blue and Little Girl Green

Here's an early example of a "mash-up"...
...putting existing nursery rhyme characters into Christmas to create new tales!
Written and illustrated by Walt (Pogo) Kelly, this never-reprinted tale from the final Christmas with Mother Goose anthology (Dell's Four Color #253 [1949]) adds new characters that didn't exist in the nursery rhyme.
