Friday Fun BIG APPLE COMIX "Peep Shows"

I can tell you from first-hand experience...
...this is, in fact, an extremely accurate look (except for the last four panels in the story)...
...at what visiting 42nd Street in the 1970s and 80s was like!
My high school was nearby (West 54th between 5th and 6th), and I discovered that, when you wore a sportscoat or leisure suit (which I had to wear daily), you could pass as over 18, even if you were only 15!

Reading Room SPACE ACTION "Double Menace on Jupiter's Moon"

Strap on your rocket-packs, space cadets...
...because we're about to blast off to the future...as seen in the 1950s!
Penciled by Lou Cameron and inked by Rocco Mastroserio, this tale from Ace's Space Action #1 (1952), was typical of pulp and comic sci-fi of the era with it's flagrant disregard for science, not to mention simple logic.
The writer is, mercifully, unknown.

Reading Room OPERATION: PERIL "Time Travelers: Adventure Among the Stars" Conclusion

...no, they weren't shooting it out with aliens on an airless planetoid, as this misleading Odgen Whitney cover shows, but they have been transported to Saturn, where Tom is about to do battle, unarmed, against a really big green alien...
Will the Saturnians reappear?
And if they do, will it be as friend or foe?
Only writer Richard Hughes and artist Ken Bald, who produced this tale for ACG's Operation Peril #4 (1951) know the answer!

Reading Room OPERATION: PERIL "Time Travelers: Adventure Among the Stars" Part 1

...as they decide to seek government financing!
Looks like a classic "man vs alien in hand to hand combat" scenario!
You've seen it in Flash Gordon, Star Trek, and numerous other movies, tv shows, pulps, and comics, right?
But writer Richard Hughes and artist Ken Bald have a couple of surprises up their sleeves, as you see...tomorrow!

Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Purple Mists!"

The perils of exploring the universe are many and varied...
...as seen in this never-reprinted story from Key Publications' Weird Tales of the Future #6 (1953)!
Though it's implied that one of the guys Rex and Tom shot was Rex's brother, that point is more-or-less ignored!
The writer is unknown, but artist Hy Fleishman signed his work in the first panel.
Fleishman worked for numerous publishers during the 1950s including Atlas (later Marvel), Story, Key, and Lev Gleason in various genres including horror, war, sci-fi, western, romance, and even humor.
