Reading Room CAPTAIN JOHNER AND THE ALIENS "Defensive Weapon"

...between Johner's friendly aliens and these imposters, Earth's suddenly crawling with extraterrestrials!
We had seen similar weapons before, in "Alien Welcome", but there was no explanation as to their manufacture or how they were powered!
Creator/writer/artist Russ Manning takes the time to explain how they work in this tale from Gold Key's Magnus, Robot Fighter #15 because, I suspect, a critical plot point will depend on our understanding of these devices!
Only time will tell...

Last Week on RetroBlogs...

with three tales, including the landmark story that changed his life forever!

Heroines! featured another of the Phantom Lady's Twice-Told Tales...
...involving that then-new technological wonder...TELEVISION!

Unfortunately, due to Google porting over all our images from Picausa to Google Photos without warning, we've had to bounce a couple of the presentations from this week to next week, which will make it a really-busy week of RetroBlog goodies for fans!
Think of having all your pictures organized in a file cabinet by blog title, then by alphebetical order.
Then imagine someone tosses all of those pictures into a big box and loses all the file labels!
That's what happened to us!
But don't worry, we'll sort it all out...

Reading Room: JUMPIN' JUPITER "No Soup"

The mind of writer/artist Basil Wolverton was a fascinating thing...
...as this example of his humor work from Key Publications' Weird Tales of the Future #2 (1953) demonstrates!
Whether it's his ongoing SpaceHawk strip or any of the numerous one-shot tales he did, Wolverton's Golden Age output was always instantly-recognizable!
This humor strip ran in #2 thru #5 of Key Publications' Weird Tales of the Future, along with several sci-fi/horror stories also written and illustrated by the amazing Basil!

Reading Room: JETTA OF THE 21st CENTURY "Man Trouble"

To help ease the pain of returning to school on August 15th, here's fun with the futuristic femme, Jetta!
...in this case, her very first apperance from Jetta of the 21st Century #5 (1952), which was actually the first issue.
(Issues 1-4 were a romance comic called Today's Romance!)
Ya gotta love the futuristic slang they thought would be popular in the early 1950s!
Written and penciled by the legendary Dan DeCarlo, but may not have been inked by him.
