Comics Meet Dance: "Hapless Hooligan in 'Still Moving'"

It's fascinating when live theater and comics (books or strips) combine into a new..."mutation" (for lack of a better word)...
Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic artist Art Spiegelman collaborates with Pilobolus artistic director Michael Tracy and dancers to make Hapless Hooligan in "Still Moving" -- a noirish love story told in the style of early comics.
Commissioned by the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College, and featuring Pilobolus dancers interacting live with Art's drawings (animated by Hornet's Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson), "Still Moving" tells the tragicomic tale of Hap and Lulu, separated in life and reunited after death.
Tony-winning sound designer Rob Kaplowitz assembles a collage score comprised of obscure cabaret tunes and early jazz hits to create a captivating atmosphere in this remarkable blend of comics and dance.

It's moving to the Joyce Theatre in NYC this week...

OSS 117 is back!

During the 1960s, one of the hottest competitors to the James Bond series was the OSS 117 series of flix.
"Who?"
OSS 117!
"Never heard of him!"
Predating 007 in books (1949) and movies (1956), secret agent Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath was as popular in Europe and Asia as James Bond, but didn't make an impact in the USA.
Until 2008, when the film series, which ended in 1971, was revived and reformatted as a campy spoof featuring a overly-confident, but surprisingly-competent hero.
The first flick, Cairo: Nest of Spies, turned into an arthouse and dvd rental hit in the US!
The newest film, Lost in Rio is already out on dvd, but you should catch it in the theatre while you can.
And when you do, go "secret chic" and wear this shirt, with it's retro graphics taken from the poster for 1968's No Roses for OSS 117 starring John Gavin (who was almost James Bond in Diamonds are Forever)!

Before The X-Files, there was...Quatermass!

I've wondered where some of The X-Files' wilder concepts really came from.
Chris Carter has acknowledged a variety of influences including The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: the Night Stalker. Curiously, while there's a lot of mood and atmosphere directly attributable to those sources, there's very little of the actual concepts or plots from them in The X-Files.
This is not the case with another sci-fi series...
The 11th Hour Web Magazine did a story about similarities between key plot points of The X-Files (both the series and first feature film) and a group of four tv mini-series from England (all of which were also made into feature films) about Bernard Quatermass, a scientist fighting both aliens from beyond and his own disbelieving government superiors! (sound familiar?)
Read the article, then continue...
Whether or not the copying was deliberate, it's there! (IOHO, I agree it's more than coincidental!)
Thus, we consider Nigel Kneale's Quatermass series to be the direct ancestor to Chris Carter's X-Files both in concept and content.
In that spirit, we at Atomic Kommie Comics™ present a group of the posters of the predecessor series to The X-Files including...
The Creeping Unknown (Quatermass Xperiment), Enemy From Space (Quatermass 2), and Five Million Years to Earth (Quatermass and the Pit) on a variety of kool kollectibles!
We've been unable to find a poster for the final movie, simply titled Quatermass, which had a brief run in the US. It was an edited version of the final miniseries entitled Quatermass Conclusion, which ran in England, and is not a remake as the other films were!

'Tis Better to Give than to Receive (especially bullets!)

In the season of giving, the crew at Atomic Kommie Comics™ ask "why not give the guys who gave as good as they got?"

That's our roundabout (but alliterative) way of saying you should visit the Real Life Criminals section of our Crime & Punishment™ line for some criminal, but kitchy, collectibles for the Mob maven in your life!

We're talkin' Al Capone, "Lucky" Luciano, and especially John Dillinger on everything from black hoodies to mousepads!
With the new Dillinger biopic Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp out on DVD & Blu-ray, now's the time to grab a funky, but affordable, retro collectible and combine it with said DVD or Blu-ray to make the perfect gift set for the felony fan you love!

It's an offer you can't refuse. (Oh, wait, that's another gangster epic...)

Flyin' Jenny: Comics' FIRST Aviatrix™

Amelia Earhart has inspired quite a bit of pop culture over the years, either directly or indirectly.
Besides the current Hilary Swank movie Amelia, there have been films including Flight to Freedom, Amelia Earhart: the Final Flight, and she's even been featured in sci-fi like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Night at the Museum 2: Battle for the Smithsonian, and the two-part Star Trek: Voyager episode "The '37s"!
She also inspired writers and artists of the 1940s to do strips specifically about female flyers!

The first newspaper strip (and comic book) about such an aviatrix was Flyin' Jenny, created in 1941.

Her artistic pedigree was impeccable!
Jenny's creator was Russell Keaton, who had previously worked on the aviation-themed SkyRoads strip, as well as the first Buck Rogers comics!
When Keaton passed away in 1945, Marc Swayze (best known for co-creating Mary Marvel) took over illustrating the last year of the series.

"Jenny" was Jenny Dare, a test pilot for Starcraft Aviation who, besides flying experimental aircraft, also battled saboteurs, industrial spies, and other evil sorts, handling the threats as well as any male could!
One of the coolest aspects of the series was the fact that most male pilots looked down on women fliers...until Jenny either beat (or in some cases, rescued them), forcing them to acknowledge and grudgingly respect her!
Jenny's co-stars included aircraft designer (and platonic friend) Rick Davis and newspaper photographer Babe Woods.
The newspaper comic strip ran two simultaneous storylines, one in the Sunday strip, and a different one in the Monday thru Saturday "daily" strip.
Unfortunately, after World War II ended, interest in the strip waned, and it was cancelled in 1946, along with a comic book series that had just begun reprinting the newspaper strip.

Trivia:
The name "Flying Jenny" also referred to a famous Curtis JN-4 biplane of the 1920s and '30s. A mis-printed postage stamp (known as the "Inverted Jenny") illustrating the airplane is one of the rarest and most expensive stamps in the world!

We at Atomic Kommic Comics™ feel the time is right to resurrect Flyin' Jenny as part of our Heroines™ line of cool clothing and collectibles.
Her single best comic cover, shot directly from the original comic, then digitally-restored and remastered, is now available on t-shirts, mugs, journals, and other kool kollectibles which would look great unde the Christmas tree!
PLUS: Copies of the now out-of-print book Aviation Art of Russell Keaton (featuring Flyin' Jenny) can be found HERE! (It'd make a great gift package with one [or more] of our collectibles...Hint, Hint!)
Grab them NOW, before they disappear..like Amelia!

You can also visit the OFFICIAL website of Amelia Earhart!
Learn about the heroic woman who inspired the creation of Flyin' Jenny!
