Friday Fun CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST "Premiere"

Here's the first appearance of a comics legend (over 100 series with his name in the title)...
...who, at the time this came out, was already an animation mainstay!
Utilizing story elements from Casper's first cartoon (1945's Paramount NovelToon "The Friendly Ghost", written by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo) this opener written by Isadore Klien and likely illustrated by one of the cartoon series' animators appeared in St John's Casper the Friendly Ghost #1 (1949)
Interestingly, though Harvey Comics acquired the character rights from Paramount Pictures and continued the series after St John went out of business, they never reprinted the covers or stories of the five issues by St John!

Reading Room STRANGE TALES OF SUSPENSE "Uncle Ed and the Men from Space"

Telling stories about monsters from outer space is common around Halloween...
...just ask Orson Welles!
But when real aliens show up, things aren't quite what they seem...
A simple little tale from Atlas' Strange Stories of Suspense #5 (which was the first issue of the title)
Oddly, the GCD lists "Bill LaCava" as the artist, but the work is clearly John Forte (whose signature is at the bottom of the first panel!)
Forte is best known for his work at DC Comics including long stints on Superman Family series, particularly Tales of the Bizarro World and Legion of Super-Heroes.
The writer is unknown.

Classic WAR OF THE WORLDS Movie Posters!

Because Halloween makes me think of War of the Worlds, here's a link to a batch of 6 limited-edition posters from the first (and best) movie version of HG Wells' classic novel.

Photographed from the original posters (not from second-generation repros, tiny pix in books or low-rez internet files), the art has been lovingly-restored and digitally-remastered.

And, best of all, every one of the posters features those really-kool Martian war machines!

And there's even a couple of foreign versions...

Enjoy!

I Love Zombies! You Love Zombies! We ALL Love Zombies!

ZOMBIES!
Call them the undead, the unliving, reanimated corpses, or even the ultimate carnivores, zombies are HOT, HOT, HOT!
With The Walking Dead back on tv screens for its' final season, zombies have never been more popular!
But it, as well as all the other films and tv series currently featuring zombies owe a debt to the visual depictions of the shambling undead from the horror pulps and comics of the Golden Age (1930s-1950s)!
Like video games today, those periodicals were deemed so harmful to the psyches of impressionable youths that the government held hearings about possibly banning them altogether!
The comics industry barely survived, but ended up toning down horror comics to a mere shadow of their blood-dripping selves, only recently, in the 1990s, returning in all their gruesome glory!
Even with modern technology, today's zombie flix are hard pressed to match these classic comics for visceral visual thrills.
So, it's with pardonable pride that Atomic Kommie Comics™ re-presents some of the creepiest and koolest covers from those bygone days, digitally-restored and remastered, on a line of collectibles including mugs, hoodies, and book/messenger bags!
If you're looking for a birthday or holiday present for a fan of the "life-impaired" (or a Halloween treat for yourself), why not combine one of our kool kollectibles with one of the books or DVDs available on-line or at brick-and-mortar stores?

Monday Mars Madness WILD! "Menace from Mars"

Most of the time, a Martian invasion story should be taken seriously!
This never-reprinted tale from one of Atlas' many MAD! comic clones, WILD! #2 (1954) is not one of those tales!
Though we know the talented and versatile Howie Post illustrated the story, nobody knows who wrote it!
But it reads a lot like Stan Lee...

Friday Fun / Humor in a Jugular Vein "Blechhula!" & "Night Gawker"

Here's two creepy classics from the 1970s that should've been comic books, but weren't!

...as presented in our "brother" RetroBlog specializing in TV/movie/radio comics, Secret Sanctum of Captain Video!
Both were satirized in never-reprinted strips from Marvel's short-lived humor comics Spoof and ARRRGH!
Blacula never made it to comics, but Night Stalker has appeared under the Moonstone banner since 2002.

Reading Room / Halloween Horror UNCANNY TALES "Witch in the Woods"

Since we posted a story about people blaming horror comic books for all the world's evils...

...we thought we'd run another tale by the same writer from the same period!
As Stan Lee's somewhat snarky script for this story from Atlas' Menace #7 (1953) points out, those beloved fairy tales were as mind-rotting as the comics Wertham and the others hypocritically tried to ban!
Joe Sinnott's clean and elegant renderings keep the story from being too grotesque, helping to sell Lee's point without the extreme gore some other publishers of the period (and even Atlas itself) occasionally went for!

Monday Madness / Halloween Horror THE SPECTRE "Hit and Run!"

Our final pre-Halloween entry...

...is from the final issue of The Spectre's stint as a horror host de-powered from being one of the DC Universe's most powerful characters!
Here's one of the stories you'd find under this kool Nick Cardy cover for DC's Spectre #10 (1969)...
Wow!
No wonder God "demoted" the Spectre!
Writer Steve Skeates and artist Jose Delbo showed that, despite once being a near-omnipotent entity, the Ghostly Guardian is still...only human!
BTW, this issue also had an usual text feature...its' own obituary by DC's resident historian, Mark Hanerfeld!
The Spectre did return, and sacrifice his...existence...to save both Earth One and Earth-Two in the Justice League's annual team-up with the Justice Society in DC's JLA #82-83 (1970).
