Reading Room: "COMICS" McCORMICK "Octopus"

Each issue our hero encounters characters from a different comic genre!
This time, he faces a super-villain who's the lead in his own strip.
(Note: contains some racial stereotypes common to the period and may be NSFW)
In the early days of the Golden Age, most anthology comics had at least one strip with a villain as the lead, the most famous being The Claw who started as the lead in Silver Streak Comics, but was eventually superseded as the cover feature by the original DareDevil.
This story from Terrific Comics #3 (1944) features a villain who shared the same name as a pulp villain who had his own (one issue) title as well as The Spirit's arch-foe who never showed his face.

Reading Room: SUPERSNIPE "Kidnapping of Mary Lou"

Yeah, we're fanboys (and fangirls) here at Atomic Kommie Comics™...
...but even we are mere poseurs compared to Koppy McFad, aka SuperSnipe!
In one of the first comics metafictions, Koppy was a kid who read comics and then daydreamed about being a superhero himself, including interacting with other comics characters, who were fictional characters in his world, as well as real-life villains like Adolf Hitler!
Debuting in the back pages of Shadow Comics, he appeared briefly in Doc Savage Comics, then transferred to Army & Navy Comics, becoming so popular that the book was retitled SuperSnipe Comics as of #6!
In fact his appearance in Army & Navy Comics #5 (1942) was so important, it featured the only time Doc Savage and The Shadow appeared together (albeit in a cameo) in any story before the 1990s...as you can see below!
The Shadow and Doc Savage are holding up SuperSnipe. Can you name the other heroes? If you can, you're a real fanboy/girl!
BTW, you'll note that Koppy didn't start wearing the trademark red underwear (as seen in the cover at the top of the entry) until he gained his own title...
Ironically, SuperSnipe outlasted most of the superheroes who inspired him, with his title's run ending in late 1949.
Story and art by George Marcoux, an underrated master of humor comics with over 200 stories and covers to his credit.
In an amazing feat, Marcoux was the only writer or artist to render SuperSnipe during his run!
(How many characters have that distinction outside of a mini-series?)
Curiously, his adventures haven't been reprinted, resulting in his comics being among the most expensive on eBay and other venues!

Reading Room: "COMICS" McCORMICK "He Daydreams Adventure"

If you're reading this blog, you're probably a fanboy or fangirl...
...so, I'm sure you'll appreciate this guy, who, along with competitor SuperSnipe, was considered the "World's #1 Comic Book Fan"!
This never-reprinted debut tale from Holyoke's Terrific Comics #2 (1944) was written and illustrated by Ed Wheelan, one of the most influential creators of the period who is, sadly, nearly-forgotten today.
There's a basic bio about him HERE, but he's really deserving of as much attention as other greats like Will Eisner and Jack Kirby.

"'Comics' McCormick" ran for the remainder of Terrific Comics' existence, then popped into Cat-Man Comics for an issue, along with several other orphaned Terrific Comics series.
When Holyoke went out of business, Wheelan took the character over to EC Comics where he appeared in all four issues of Fat & Slat, which featured only Wheelan's work, and shares, with Moon Girl, the sad distinction of being one of the few EC Comics series that's never been reprinted!

DC Comics Comments about the Fans...

Part of DC's presentation to retailers at this year's San Diego ComicCon.
Well, at least they used classic Silver Age art! (But why did they screw up The Atom's costume colors?)
And these fandom-related goodies from Amazon...

Return of the ORIGINAL FanBoy PLUS: Discount coupon!

The Boy with the Most Comic Books in America!
Nope, it ain't YOU, Bunkie!
It's Koppy McFad! (or at least it was in 1942!)
In one of the first comics metafictions, Koppy was a kid who read comics and then daydreamed about being a superhero himself, including interacting with other comics characters, who were fictional characters in his world, as well as real-life villains like Adolf Hitler!
Debuting in the back pages of Shadow Comics, he quickly transferred to Army & Navy Comics, becoming so popular that the book was retitled SuperSnipe Comics as of #6!
(In fact his appearance in Army & Navy Comics was so important, it featured the only time Doc Savage and The Shadow appeared together in a story before the 1990s!)
Not content to merely fantasize about heroics, McFad donned a red flannel union suit and attempted to crush evil in his neighborhood, usually with embarrassing (but humorous) results.
BTW, you'll note that Koppy didn't start wearing his red underwear until he gained his own title...
Ironically, he outlasted most of the superheroes who inspired him, ending his title's run in late 1949.
Curiously, his adventures haven't been reprinted, resulting in his comics being among the most expensive on eBay and other venues!
So we've brought him back on a new line of collectibles including t-shirts, mugs, iPhone cases, and a 12-month calendar!
Since 1949, a number of comics characters obesessed with comic books have appeared...
Some, like Captain Klutz, have worn red woolly underwear, but most, like Flaming Carrot and FanBoy, don't.
But all owe a debt to the first FanBoy...Koppy McFad!
What could be a better Christmas present for the fanboy (or fangirl) in your life than a kool SuperSnipe kollectible combined with one of the related books listed below for a fan-dream gift set?

Plus, we're offering a discount on any items (including SuperSnipe, natch) totaling $40 or more from the Atomic Kommie Comics™ store...

Welcome to our new venue...

Since my background is in print (CMYK), not web (RGB), and my knowledge of html is practically nonexistent, I've been dependent on sites like Squidoo and Blogger to express my fannish inclinations.
In this case, ComicBookMovie.com enabled me to set up my own fan page for (surprise) The Green Hornet incorporating their site's newsfeed (tailored to info about the character) along with my own material including galleries from my collections of tv series (like the pic above), movie serial, radio show, and comics material as well as several upcoming articles about the character's various incarnations.
(One of the things about being a collector is showing off your collection to like-minded fans. This'll enable me to do so, virtually.)
It's a work in progress, and I hope to have it completed by the time the movie opens this December.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.
Stop by and say "Hi!"
