Holiday Reading Room COMICO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL "Stiflemix Diaries"

Think stores begin their Christmas push  (as early as Labor Day) too early?
Some people thought so...three decades ago, as this never-reprinted tale from Comico's Christmas Special #1 (1988) demonstrates!
Note that, in 2094, we'll have both surveillance cameras (too true) and video tape (which, for consumer use, has all but disappeared as of 2015)!
Scripted by Doug (Swamp Thing) Wheeler, and illustrated by Tim (Batman: the Long Halloween) Sale, this story is an example of the kool off-the wall material by up-and-coming creators the sadly-defunct Comico was eager to run!

Friday Holiday Fun CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Christmas Alphabet"

Nobody did Christmas-themed comics better than the legendary Walt (Pogo) Kelly...
...as this never-reprinted piece from Dell's Four Color Comics #201 (1948), one of the annual Christmas with Mother Goose anthologies, proves!
Yeah, it is difficult to find something Yuletide-related that begins with "Z"...any suggestions?
Christmas with Mother Goose was an ongoing annual from 1945 through 49.
It apparently ended when Walt Kelly left Dell to work full-time on his new Pogo newspaper strip.
But Dell continued to do Yuletide annuals with a Frosty the Snowman series from 1951 to 1961 as well as continuing an already-ongoing line of Kris Kringle-themed Santa Claus Funnies running from 1944 through 1961!
(In early 1962 Dell Comics broke up into two companies, the already-established Dell, which had really just handled distribution, and Gold Key Comics, which had handled the editorial and art production chores, but not newsstand distribution.
This left Dell, which had to build a comics editorial division from scratch, without the resources to continue the Christmas-themed annuals.)

CHRISTMAS CARDS...NOT a Luxury in the Covid Age!

It's the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year"...

...and how do we communicate our holiday wishes to friends and family in this high-tech, impersonal age?
Why, Christmas Cards, of course...and not the e-mail type!

Remember how, after Thanksgiving, you'd look forward to getting those envelopes with colorful Yuletide cards, usually with lots of handwritten news and in-jokes?
Remember the warmth with loved ones you'd feel from those?
Remember how you'd create displays on the mantlepiece or stairs with the koolest of those cards?
Well, more than ever, it's time to bring back that warm-and-fuzzy feeling!
And we have just the cards to do it...

Plus, if you want some really wild variations...
All are exclusive designs not available anywhere else!
All are available as singles for $4.99, 10-packs for $19.99 ($1.99 per card), and 20-packs for $29.99 ($1.49 per card).

Talk about a Christmas miracle!
Order now, so you'll be able to send them out on time!

CYBER-SANTA: the Future of Cool Christmas Cards

Want to send a Christmas card that's future-forward but also retro-kool?
My personal favorite is the one shown above: Santa Claus 2.0 where Future Santa (note the four arms!) meets his replacement...Cyber-Santa!
In the late 1950s-early 1960s we thought there was nothing science couldn't improve...including Santa Claus!
Galaxy Magazine's primary artist in this era (both covers and interiors) was Ed Emshwiller, who signed his work "Emsh".
Known for both playfullness and superb detail, Ed did a series of Christmas covers from 1951 to 1960 featuring a four-armed Santa in the future celebrating the Yuletide with humans and aliens alike!
They're included in our collection along with numerous comic book covers featuring Santa in the past, present, and future!
Order now, to have plenty of time to send them out!
(I normally don't start promoting Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, but expected shipping delays and potential shortages of blank card stock make me do so to be sure customers can get what they want, when they want it!)

A Star Wars Christmas is coming...

...and what better way to celebrate than singing Christmas carols along with C3PO and R2D2?
Produced in 1980, this Christmas album was produced by Meco Monardo (who had previously recorded Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk).
Anthony Daniels voiced C-3PO and Ben Burtt provided the sound effects he created for Star Wars to bring R2-D2 and Chewbacca to life!
'What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)' reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1980. (It was the third digitally-recorded single in chart history.)
Trivia: Jon Bon Jovi made his first recording ever on this album (credited as John Bongiovi), singing lead vocals on 'R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas.' Bon Jovi did it as a favor to his cousin Tony Bongiovi, one of the producers of the album.

Design of the Week SPACE SANTA

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...Space Santa (note the four arms!) listens to a cute alien child telling him what he/she/it wants for Christmas!
In the late 1950s-early 1960s we thought there was nothing science couldn't improve...including Santa Claus!
Galaxy Magazine's primary artist (both covers and interiors) in this era was Ed Emshwiller, who signed his work "Emsh".

Enjoy this final one in the series on mugs, t-shirts and other kool kollectibles!

Holiday Reading Room BEST OF O HENRY "Gift of the Magi"

With the last weekend before Christmas approaching...
...let's look at how True Love and Christmas shopping can go hand-in-hand!
This straightforward adaptation of O Henry's Christmas classic appeared in the HTF Pendulum Press' Best of O Henry (1977) digest-sized comic.
Written by John Fago (whose father, longtime comic artist/editor Vince Fago packaged the series) and illustrated by Anton Caravana, it was part of a series of Classics Illustrated-type publications released like the Scholastic Book Club, directly to students and school libraries.
(Don't despair Friday Fun fans!
Tragg and the Sky Gods will return next week!)
