Monday Madness FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith and the Sinister Sandblasts of Space"

What will Space Smith be like without Fletcher Hanks?
Well, it certainly reads differently than under the wild imagination of Hanks...
This never-reprinted tale from Fox's Fantastic Comics #9 (1940) is another artist trying to imitate Dick Calkins' Buck Rogers in the 25th Century art, as did a fill-in illustrator HERE.
However, the next issue brings in a radically-different approach...

Monday Madness FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith Visits the Hollow World of Bloodu"

Here's the final, Fletcher Hanks Space Smith tale...
...unfortunately, scanned from a color microfiche copy so it's very blotchy!
Apparently, Fox's Fantastic Comics #8 (1940) is so rare, that only slabbed copies are known to exist!
And they can't be opened to scan the stories without losing value...
With Hanks' departure, several writers and artists would try their hands at the series!
Wait'll you see who's coming!

Monday (late) Madness FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith and the Crustaceans of Ganymede"

Since Monday was Memorial Day, we moved Space Smith to Tuesday...
...as another artist fills-in for Fletcher Hanks, bringing a Buck Rogers-esque feel to the strip!
While the scripting on this story From Fox's Fantastic Comics #7 (1940) has that Fletcher Hanks "feel", the art, definitely, is not Hanks!
It looks like the artist is trying for the same look as Dick Calkins' original Buck Rogers newspaper strip, which was incredibly-popular at the time!

The next issue would feature a totally-Fletcher Hanks tale....for the last time!

Monday Madness FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith and the Mummified Meteor Vacuumites"

We promised you "madness"...
...and we certainly deliver it in this installment of Space Smith from Fox's Fantastic Comics #6 (1940)!
Next week will be an interesting contrast as another artist fills in for Fletcher Hanks...with decidedly-mixed results!

Monday Madness FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith and the Floating Island in the Lost Sun"

One of the truly difficult things on this blog...
...is coming up with titles for Fletcher Hanks' untitled stories!
How do you convey some of the really weird goings-on?
This Space Smith tale from Fox's Fantastic Comics #5 could've had several different titles including "The Hopping Men of the Floating Island!" or "The Hopping Men of the Lost Sun!"!
We decided on the title based on the two weird locations shown in the story.
But, like most of Fletcher Hank's stories, there's so much going on that it's hard to pin down one ot two aspects.
Best to just go along for the ride and enjoy!

BTW, you'll note we've modified the header to read "Monday Madness".
Since Monday is the beginning of the workweek/schoolweek for most of you, we felt we should dedicate our Monday entries to the weird or humorous to lighten your mood.
So, when Space Smith winds up, we'll run something equally funky or funny to entertain you and make the beginning of the week less dreary!
