Wednesday Worlds of Wonder BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR "Tonos Trap"

We should really call this one "Wednesday Worlds of What the Heck?"...

...since this never-reprinted tale from DC's Tarzan Family #61 (1976) has almost nothing to do with the previous tale!

You'll notice Zita and Skeeter from the previous tale are gone, there's a new female companion, a new interplanetary ship called "the Aerion", and Tangor seems to have run out of hair mousse.

Written by Robert Kanigher, penciled by Rudy Flores and Joe Kubert and inked by Flores, this was supposed to be a "new chapter" in the Beyond the Farthest Star saga.

Instead it was the series' finale.

Next Wednesday, we'll begin a rarely-seen sword and sorcery strip by Alan Grant, John Wagner, and Ian Gibson...

We're finally into the second Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, Lost on Venus as of this chapter from DC's Korak: Son of Tarzan #54 (1973).

Mike Kaluta continues doing a solid job, both writing and illustrating the adaptation.

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder CARSON OF VENUS "Catastrophe"

When Last We Left the First EarthMan on Venus...

...ah, the "I hate you...I love you...I hate you!" trope so popular in fiction (and, as I discovered, in real life, too)!

The adaptation of Pirates on Venus sort-of concludes on a semi-cliffhanger with this action-packed chapter from DC's Korak: Son of Tarzan #53 (1973).
(The actual conclusion of the novel takes place in the first couple of pages of the next chapter, when Kaluta (who takes over the scripting for the remainder of the strip's run) knits it and the beginning of the next novel, Lost on Venus, together!

When Last We Left the First EarthMan on Venus...

OK, it's an unlikely coincidence, but remember, Carson thwarted a previous kidnapping attempt HERE.
Apparently, when he's not nearby, potential kidnappers are far more successful!
The adaptation of Pirates on Venus races along with this action-packed chapter from DC's Korak: Son of Tarzan #52 (1973).

Considering this was a bi-monthly series, writer Len Wein and artist Mike Kaluta felt the pressure to deliver a serialized tale that would hold the audience's interest for two months at a time...and they always delivered!

Best of Reading Room KENTON OF THE STAR PATROL "Corsairs from the Coalsack!"

Space Squadron, Space Patrol, Star Rangers, Space Sentinels...

...with all those law-enforcement organizations prowling the spaceways of 1950s sci-fi, it's surprising there were any villains who dared commit crimes in the Milky Way!

This premiere appearance (but second printing) of Kenton of the Star Patrol is from Avon's Strange Worlds #1 (1950) is written by Gardner Fox, and illustrated by Joe Kubert.
It first appeared in Avon Publishing's Out of This World Adventures #2 (1950), a weird half-comic/half pulp magazine experiment that lasted only two issues.
Kenton was one of only two ongoing strips in Strange Worlds, an anthology for both sci-fi/fantasy and the occasional horror tale.
(The other one was Crom the Barbarian.)
You'll be seeing Kenton's entire short-lived series here this week and next, as deadlines on a paying gig will keep me from doing all-new posts from now until after Thanksgiving.

Joe Kubert's "So You Want to be a Cartoonist?"

Joe Kubert was one of the greatest multi-talented creatives in comics history...

...editor/writer/artist/letterer, and, most importantly, teacher.

This piece appeared in numerous DC Comics from 1969-1971, probably as the first of a series.

Most likely, due to his enormous workload, no other pages like this ever appeared.

But, the idea of instructing future creatives appealed to Kubert, and he eventually founded The Kubert School, which has superseded The School of Visual Arts (originally Cartoonists and Illustrators School) as the most prolific source of comics/graphic novel talent in America!

Trivia: The founders of both The Kubert School (Joe Kubert) and Cartoonists and Illustrators School (Burne Hogarth) were famed for their work on Tarzan!
