Wednesday Worlds of Wonder MEDUSA CHAIN Part 1

In the mid-1980s, both Marvel and DC "discovered" the graphic novel format...
...and unleashed a slew of them onto an unsuspecting audience!

The Story Continues, Next Wednesday...
This one-shot was part of the mid-1980s "DC Graphic Novel" program publishing creator-owned properties in a magazine-sized format.

Unfortunately, the line was rather hastily-conceived and implemented, resulting in a hodgepodge of books (both original stories like this and adaptations of prose novels) in various genres that were never properly-promoted.
The project was terminated after seven issues, with only Jack Kirby's Hunger Dogs showing a profit, and that was due to the heavy promotion received by anything New Gods-linked since the Super Powers line of products (based on the Fourth World characters along with classic DC heroes) were introduced at that time.
Written and illustrated (in full painted color) by the highly-underrated Ernie Colon, this never-reprinted "futuristic film noir" gem deserves a wider audience than it received when it was published almost 40 years ago.
So, for the rest of the month, we'll be re-presenting it for your reading pleasure.

What You Are About to Read Actually Happened 20 Years Ago Today...

All text is from the official 9/11 Report ...

...and all dialogue is taken verbatim from verified audio recordings!
Besides detailing the actual events, the adaptation takes what would be incredibly-tedious background text material and livens it up, as these thumbnails on the Table of Contents show...
(You didn't think I was going to present the entire book here, did you?)
Writer/editor Sid Jacobson and writer/artist Ernie Colon are best known for their work together on various Harvey Comics humor strips.
Note that Ernie had demonstrated his serious comics work for DC, Marvel, and Warren, among others on projects like Arak, Damage Control, AmethystBattleStar Galactica and Medusa Chain!
As a result, Farrar, Straus and Giroux's 9/11 Report (2006) stands as a high-water mark for a graphic novel based on history!

9/11 Report: the Graphic Adaptation

You'd think two of the guys who worked for decades on Casper and Richie Rich...
...couldn't produce something as...violent and visceral...as this!
Well, you'd be wrong!
Writer/editor Sid Jacobson and the late, great illustrator Ernie Colon took the 9/11 Commission's Report and made it into a must-read graphic novel!
BTW, a lot of the purple prose in the adaptation is taken verbatim from the original Report!

Ernie Colon (1931-2019)

Though best known for his Harvey Comics humor work...
...Ernie Colon had an impressive career as a sci-fi/horror/superhero editor/writer/artist as well, including this strip, his first non-humor comics work, in Wham-O Giant Comics (1967), the biggest single comic book in history (21" x 14")!
Ernie penciled and inked the story..and may have written it as well!
We've run a number of his HTF projects including...
I have more Ernie Colon original art in my collection than any other artist's work!
He's one of the unappreciated geniuses of the business, and, now, sadly, he's gone!

Reading Room PHASE 1 "Impact"

Best-known for his work on Richie Rich and Casper the Friendly Ghost...
...writer/artist Ernie Colon started expanding his creative horizons with samples like this!
Shortly after this, Ernie started getting more non-humor work from Warren, the short-lived Atlas/Seaboard, and Marvel, eventually ending up as a writer/artist/editor for DC in the early 1980s, where he co-created Arak: Son of Thunder and Amythyst: Princess of Gemworld!
This never-reprinted piece was just one of many pin-ups and short stories that appeared in the extremely HTF 80-page fanzine Phase 1 (1971) featuring work from gifted up-and-comers like Bernie Wrightson and Frank Brunner and long-established pros including Neal Adams, Murphy Anderson, Gray Morrow, and Ken Barr.
