Monday Mars Madness MARS ATTACKS "Invasion Begins"

When Last We Left the Inhabitants of the Red Planet...

...oh, yeah!
That's what's happening!
Now, who could argue with that?

To Be Continued in...
"Martians Approaching!"
Next Monday!
Written by Mario A Bruni and Bruce Spaulding Fuller and illustrated by Greg Capullo, each issue of the mini-comic (3"x4.5", the size of the actual trading cards) told the story of a particular card, in this case, Card #1 "The Invasion Begins"!
Note: with the exception of the cover and first page, the scans above are of two-page spreads which actually makes their original image size 6"x4.5"!
These never-reprinted comics were published two issues at a time in the same sort of boxes the original trading cards came in.
Sadly, only four issues in two box sets came out before the project ended.
Both of the writers were contributors to
Gore Shriek, which still exists on the 'Net!
Artist Greg Capullo has gone on to a long, illustrious career at MarvelImage, and DC!

Monday Mars Madness MARS ATTACKS "Prologue"

For June and July, we're returning to the Red Planet...
...with the first (and never-reprinted) comics based on the legendary trading card set!
Card art by Wally Wood, Bob Powell, and Norman Saunders
To Be Continued

Friday Fun ZANY "Russian Bubble-Gum Cards"

Americans have obsessed about Russians for over half a century...

...as this never-reprinted feature written by editor Dick Richards and illustrated by Ricahrd Doxsee from Candar's Zany #4 (1959) proves!
To explain some of the references:
"Bubble-gum cards" are trading cards, which haven't included bubble gum in the packaging for decades!
(The sugar in the gum damaged the cards!)
"Mel Stalin" is based on Mel Allen, longtime play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees.
"Dr Wherner von Foofnick" is loosely-based on Dr Werner von Braun, inventor of the V-2 rocket who later created the Saturn V rocket for NASA.
(German scientists ended up working for both the USA and USSR on various projects including the respective countries' space programs.)
"Henry Fordsky" is based on automobile innovator Henry Ford.
"Edvard R. Murovitch" is based on radio/TV newsman Edward R. Murrow.
"Mickey Mantlevitch" is based on Baseball Hall of Fame New York Yankee Mickey Mantle.
And the fact I have to explain who and what these things are makes me feel very old...

Reading Room ALIEN WORLDS "Collector's Item"

With eBayAmazon, and other sites on the 'Net, it's hard for fans today to perceive when it was a real achievement to track down a...
...like the final card in a set it took months to complete!
Written by Bruce Jones and illustrated with some kool pseudo-Mars Attacks! card graphics by Ken Steacy, this tale of trading cards and terror from Eclipse's anthology Alien Worlds #8 (1984) perfectly captures the obsessive-collector mindset all of us suffer from at one point or another during our FIAWOL (Fandom is a Way of Life) period.

Reading Room PLASM "The Sedition Agenda: Prologue 'The Death of Love' " Conclusion

...an alternate dimension/universe where Plasm, a world of humanoids using organic technology, dominates the region!
With their technology requiring constant intake of organic material as both fuel and construction material, the Plasmoids prize professional "seekers" like Lorca above all others in their society...except the ruling class.
But Lorca has begun to feel guilt about destroying all others the Plasmoids encounter simply to sustain their society.
And he's begun to question the "groupthink" that restrains individualism and free thought...
With an intriguing start like this, you may well ask...what happened?
Marvel Comics happened!
You can read the gory details HERE.
End result: Defiant Comics was gone in two years!
Sad, eh?
Depending upon the audience response, we may present more tales of Plasm and the Defiant Comics multiverse.
It's up to you, dear readers!

Reading Room PLASM "The Sedition Agenda: Prologue 'The Death of Love' " Part 1

There have been numerous comic companies that lasted only a couple of years...
...with Defiant Comics being one of the examples of a company who had all the right ingredients, but failing to achieve long-term success!
Their first, and longest-running title was Warriors of Plasm, which began with a unique #0 issue...

The Story Continues...Next Wednesday!
Conceived by Jim Shooter, fresh off his success at Valiant Comics, the tale sets up the Defiant Universe (actually a "multiverse" since this dimension and Earth's dimension, which it will soon interact with, are separate) and introduces us to the world of Plasm, where technology is organic and must be "fed" with other organic material in order to continue functioning!
You may ask "what makes this #0 issue so unique?"
Look at the page layouts.
Every page adheres to a grid pattern.
There's a good reason for that.
This entire issue was designed to be printed as trading cards!
So the panels, and most importantly, the captions and word balloons, all had to fit on what would be a "page" composed of nine cards!
No cutting-off titles, captions, or word balloons on seperate cards!
Here's Page 5 as a comic page...
...and here's how the cards that make up Page 5 look when placed in the album...
In addition, the cards were printed two-sided so that the cards of Page 1 had Page 2 on their backs, the cards of Page 3 had Page 4 on their backs, and so on!
Even so, the card set ran 150 cards, including four groups of chase cards which were rarer than the story cards!
And, of course, you had no idea what cards you'd get in a given pack!
You can see the complete set of cards HERE.
Be here next week for the rest of the comic story and more background about Defiant!
