Holiday Reading Room YOUNG DOCTORS "Dr Tom Brent: Christmas Comes in August!"

You have no idea how few medical-themed Yuletide comic stories there are...

...until you try to find one...and end up with a tale that's the victim of terrible printing!
This never-reprinted tale from Charlton's Young Doctors #6 (1963) unfortunately shows off the terrible printing Charlton Comics was famous for!
The publisher didn't utilize the printing companies literally every other comics publisher used.
Instead, to save money, they printed on old, second-hand printing presses.
But those presses had been constructed to handle cardboard and plastic packaging, not the much-thinner newsprint paper used for comics!
As a result, their comics had an amazing amount of smearing and off-register color, as you can see from the first page.
It's a shame, because the art by penciler Joe Sinnott and inker Vince Colletta deserves a better presentation!
BTW, Young Doctors was an anthology title featuring tales of all the MDs who had their own Charlton books at the time, including, of course, Dr Tom Brent, Young Intern!

Friday Fun TRUMP "Common Cold"

Long before a putz named Donald made the word a world-wide punchline...

Illustrated by Al Jaffee and likely written by editor Harvey Kurtzman, Jaffee himself (who was also serving as assistant editor), or Will Elder, this two-pager from #1 (1957) was a typical example of the high level of humor the creators (who had just left MAD) were capable of!
Though sales were decent, unrelated financial problems caused Hefner to cancel the title with #2 (and all other non-Playboy projects at that point in time.
Needless to say, Hugh overcame this temporary fiscal setback to create a world-wide publishing empire!
Kurtzman and Elder continued to do projects with Hefner, the best-known being Little Annie Fanny!
And, sadly, Al Jaffee, who's best-known for creating MAD Magazine's MAD Fold-In back cover feature passed away this week.

CoronaVirus Comics: LOCKDOWN HEROES! The Portfolio Created Against Covid-19

Italian comics (or "Fumetti") artist Milo Manara is noted for his beautiful (often nude) women...
...though not in his work for America's PG-13 Marvel Comics!
But these last few months, living in an Italy under total lockdown, Manara has started taking a very different approach to portraying women...

Rather than the usual coquettishly-posed, minimally-clad examples of male lust, he's discovered a different appreciation of the female form.
Posting on Facebook, he expressed his gratitude to doctors and nurses, ambulance drivers and techs, policewomen, delivery workers and others who perform essential services during the pandemic.
In terms of style, it's still recognizably his work, but now has a far different focus.
Check out his FaceBook gallery HERE.
BONUS: There's a "motion comics" version of this superb illustration...
...HERE!

And now a word for charity...
...is a work of art and, at the same time, a result of civil commitment and a testimony of a historical moment.

Lockdown Heroes is a portfolio that collects all the illustrations mentioned above, as high-quality prints on fine paper, with Manara's signature on a dry stamp, inside a folder contained, in turn, in a case.
Plus: a dossier written by Italian pop culture expert Vincenzo Mollica, plus an interview with Milo Manara.

A charitable donation from the sale of each copy of Lockdown Heroes will support the Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan, the University Hospital of Padua and the Domenico Cotugno Hospital in Naples.

CoronaVirus Comics PICTURE STORIES FROM SCIENCE "Battle Against Bacteria"

Here's an explanation of the human body's defenses that's so simple...
...even Don da Con could understand it!
(Plus it has pictures!)
Yes, I know bacteria aren't viruses, but the principles are the same...
Written by Morris Nelson Sachs and illustrated by Don Cameron, this never-reprinted short from EC's Picture Stories from Science #2 (1947) was produced when EC was Educational Comics, not the later horror, crime, and sci-fi oriented Entertaining Comics!
