Cowboys & Aliens...the 1950s Comic Book version!

Click on the art to enlarge
Long before the new movie Cowboys and Aliens, extraterrestrials and cowpokes did battle on Earth and in space!
Read the tale that predates the new movie by fifty years, starring Buster Crabbe (Flash Gordon / Buck Rogers), and illustrated by not one, not two, but three of the greatest sci-fi artists of the 1950s (Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, and Roy Krenkel), only at our "brother" blog Western Comics Adventures™!

Reading Room: SPURS JACKSON "Meet the Menace of Comet X"

Click on the art to enlarge
With Cowboys & Aliens opening tomorrow, we once again travel back to the 1950s, when four-color cowpokes journeyed into space on a bi-monthly basis...
"Scientific accuracy!  We don't need no scientific accuracy!"
The appropriately-titled blog Awesomer Than Thou details the many, many goofs of this story!

With the re-introduction of Korok and Vodor, there were obviously plans to make them ongoing baddies.
Unfortunately, Space Western Comics only had one issue to go before reverting to Cowboy Western Comics! (with one final appearance by Korok and Vodor!)
Art by John Belfi.

YouTube Wednesday: Quatermass Xperiment

First it was a record-breaking BBC-tv mini-series broadcast live on six consecutive nights in 1953...(and no, that's not a typo in the blog title)

In 1955, it was the first horror film from the legendary Hammer Studios...

In 2005, it was redone in a new, live BBC broadcast starring David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Indira Varma (TorchWood, Human Target)!

We're covering it over at our "brother" blog Secret Sanctum of Captain Video™!
Stop by and have a look at the never-reprinted comic adaptation of the feature film version!

Reading Room: VIC TORRY & HIS FLYING SAUCER "Captive Planet"

One of the weirdest one-shot comics ever...
...art by Golden Age great Bob Powell!
We'll come back to Vic and Laura next week...
Published in 1950 during the flying saucer craze caused by UFO sightings at Roswell in 1947, Vic Torry and His Flying Saucer was probably going to be an ongoing series, but never got past the first issue.
I have that impression because this issue is primarily an intro, detailing how Vic came into possession of the alien ship, as well as setting up an ongoing antagonistic situation with at least one extraterestrial race.
It's possible that the comic was intended as a lead-in to a toy line which never developed.

Cowboys vs Aliens Starring...Buster Crabbe?

Click on the art to enlarge
Yes, that's Buster Crabbe, beloved movie serial (Flash Gordon / Buck Rogers) and b-movie star in his own 1950s comic book.
And, yes, he's battling lizardlike aliens while wearing full cowboy regalia over 40 years before Cowboys and Aliens, the graphic novel!
And, yes, that's a beautiful alien woman with a ray gun at his side, zapping lizardlike aliens!
(You didn't think Spurs Jackson had a monopoly on this sort of stuff, did you?)

For an explanation, and the complete, uncut, never-reprinted comic story, click on over to our "brother" blog Western Comics Adventures™ where the Old West is not only wild, it's weird!

We've taken the art from the cover of this issue, digitally-remastered and restored it, and emblazoned it on a variety of kool komic kollectibles!

Captain America Silver Age Gallery

Click on any of the panels to enlarge
Today we're re-presenting a gallery of Captain America art from the Silver Age by Jim Steranko (above) and the character's co-creator Jack Kirby (all the rest).
Why?
Because I'm going to see Captain America the First Avenger again, and I'm in a "Captain America" sorta mood!
Besides, I don't plug my collectibles everyday! Just most days...  ;-)
