Space Hero Saturdays FANTASTIC COMICS "Space Smith and the Headless Men of the Gold Comet"

Newspaper comics had Flash GordonBuck Rogers, and Brick Bradford...
...but comic books had the even wilder exploits of adventurers like Space Smith!
Wow!
Dianna's no mere helpless female sidekick, as this tale from Fox's Fantastic Comics #4 (1940) proves!
Fletcher Hanks was no stranger to visualizing assertive women.
His Fantomah strip in Fiction House's Jungle Comics presented a jungle heroine with super-powers on a par with Wonder Woman (whom she pre-dated by a year)!

Reading Room: AMAZING ADVENTURES "Winged Death on Venus"

Some story titles need no elaboration or explanation...
...especially when the tale features early work by a young up-and-comer destined to become a graphic storytelling legend...
One of the legendary Wally Wood's earliest assignments, this story from Ziff-Davis' Amazing Adventures #1 (1950) shows off both his ongoing strengths (beautiful women, detailed slick inking) and early weaknesses (anatomy).
Within a couple of years, his anatomy improved considerably.

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder SILVER SURFER: THE ULTIMATE COSMIC EXPERIENCE Preface and Creator Bios

Here's the text pieces from the long OOP graphic novel...
Judge for yourself as to the historical accuracy of the material.
Nice to see the rest of the creatives get a little attention.
But, Stan Lee realized the PR value to his audience of promoting the writers and artists like rock stars (as his promo for the first issue of Fantasy Masterpieces demonstrated), and pushed the image of a happy "bullpen" (with him as the lead creative, of course).
We hope you enjoyed seeing this long-lost bit of Marvel history, and suggest you bookmark this blog for a lot more HTF comics goodies...

Reading Room WEIRD ADVENTURES "Man Who Lived Backwards!"

What if someone tried to prevent you from reaching tomorrow...
...and the only way you could move forward was to kill him in the past?
Check out this never-reprinted tale from Ziff-Davis' one-shot Weird Adventures #10 (1951) for the answer!

So, even though Paul had a change of heart, and tried to save David, his rival for Peggy died anyway, and Paul ended up with the woman they both loved!
What's the moral?
You can change history, even if you don't intend to?
Being good, even if it may be to your personal detriment, will be rewarded in the end?
Ah, well, I guess there are some things we're not meant to understand...
It may be just as well that both the writer and artist are unknown.

Monday Madness: When Life May End Up Imitating Art...

...as shown in the 2013 movie The Congress!

You'll note the production title was Robin Wright at The Congress.
There's a good reason for that!
In the film, actress Robin Wright (played by...surprise...actress Robin Wright) sells the right to digitize her face and body to a movie studio, which then can exclusively use it in any movie or TV show as they see fit, even ones she wouldn't, herself, have agreed to perform in!
They do pay her a considerable sum of cash for the digital rights, with the understanding that she will retire from performing and not make any public appearances in her capacity as "actress Robin Wright" for 20 years, at which point the contract may be re-negotiated.
Sounds like one of the sticking points in the SAG-AFTRA strike against movie and TV studios...except the studios want to pay performers a one time "day rate" for doing the same thing!
Based on the Stanislaw Lem novel Futurological Congress, the movie came and went quickly, creating more of a stir overseas than in America!
Rather than rehash the points, I'd direct you to an excellent post HERE going into more detail about both the film and the book that inspired it!
And, though the movie is available on several streaming services, I'd recommend getting the DVD or Blu-Ray for the director's audio commentary and special features.

Double Your Summer Fun with Double The Shadows!

What's better than an adventure of The Shadow unseen for half a century?
How about TWO adventures?
First, the guy with the gadgets and blue/green spandex faces off against the evil descendants of both Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun on Monday at
...then, the "classic" 1940s pulp/radio version faces off against a bootlegger mob led by an an acrobatic, athletic mastermind in a fight to the death over Niagara Falls on Thursday in
The heat is on for crime this summer!
