Give Your Loved One a Batman Christmas!

Want to give your Batman-obsessed loved one (and we all have at least one) a "Batty" Christmas?

Combine the blu ray (or dvd) set ...

...with a not-available-in-stores digitally-restored reproduction of a 1966 Carmine Infantino/Murphy Anderson promo piece...
...created in 1966 to hype the then-new tv show!
Ironically, the visual looks more like a huge flat-screen tv than the small cathode-ray tv tubes of the 1960s!
Available in a variety of formats to fit both decor and budget!

Who Knows What Evil Lurks in Letterbox on Blu-Ray?

The Shadow Knows...
Almost 20 years after its theatrical release (has it really been that long?) and 15 after its release on DVD in a pan-and-scan version, The Shadow is finally getting a letterbox release! from Shout! Factory.
(Note: I do have the laserdisc and the Academy Award screener VHS, which are letterbox (and the laserdisc has DTS stereo), but I've been waiting for a DVD edition.
Unfortunately, this is Blue-Ray only, so I'll have to ask a friend in England to send me the British DVD, which is letterbox.)
The somewhat-sparse extras include new interviews with Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, Tim Curry, director Russell Mulcahy, production designer Joseph Nemec, III, director of photography Stephen H. Burum and writer David Koepp, plus the original trailer.
Sadly, no commentaries, and they didn't even include the rather cheesy, yet kool Taylor Dane music video...
Ah, well...
BTW, the complete, never-reprinted, two-issue comic adaptation of the movie by Michael Kaluta is on our brother RetroBlog Secret Sanctum of Captain Video™ .
Even though the script is fairly close to the movie (with a new framing sequence), visually, it's a totally-different experience!

Batman the TV Series on DVD/BluRay...FINALLY!

We're Leaping for Joy!
At last, the 1960s Batman TV series is being released on home video!
A complete series box set has been confirmed, with individual season sets a likely alternative for those who don't want to spend a fortune at one shot...
Ah, to relive the childhood memories of those long-lost days...
Now, where's the other Dynamic Duo of the 1960s...
The Green Hornet?
(and Kato, of course)
Why not a mega-set of the two shows?

The Lone Ranger: Complete Series Box Set at an Incredibly-LOW Price, plus Classic Lone Ranger Movie Blogathon Posts!

See this kool Brand-New box set with every 1950s episode (even the John Hart ones)?
If you look on the net, the cheapest you'll see it for is $129.99!
Want to get it, still in shrink-wrap, for...hold your breath...
...$79.99?
Yes!
$79.99!
Go to Costco!
It's supposed to be $99.99 (which is still a great deal).
But, apparently due to the collapse of the new movie, they're taking an additional $20 off to move it off the shelves!
(I found this out yesterday, when I went shopping at Costco...)
BTW, it's not available through Costco's website, only at the warehouses!
Who would've thought a movie about one of our favorite heroes doing badly at the box office would work to our benefit?
Art by Leroy Neiman
Our contributions to the Dynamic Duos in Classic Film Blogathon are now up, including...
A look at the Republic Film serials at Hero Histories.
The two feature films starring the TV Ranger and Tonto at Secret Sanctum of Captain Video.
and
The previous cinema flop, 1981's Legend of the Lone Ranger at Western Comics Adventures.

YouTube Wednesday: Little Shop of Horrors...the ORIGINAL Ending!

In the film's original ending, like the stage play...everybody DIES, and Audrey II's spawn conquer the world!
Test audiences found it too depressing, so a new ending (with a possibility of a sequel) was filmed.
Here is the complete original ending from the point when Audrey (Ellen Greene) realizes Audrey II is sentient...
NOTE: this is a combo of final footage and a colorized b/w "workprint", so things go from clean to rough, indicating what's the "never seen-before" material!

Before Scott Pilgrim was...Cutie Honey!

Scott Pilgrim vs the World got me to thinking about other films derived from comics/graphic novels/manga that utitlized not just the storytelling aspects that comics/graphic novels/manga derived from movies, but the particular visual bits created for the printed page that teleported to film versions.
In America, the Batman tv series and first Hulk film are the most obvious aspects, with sound effects spelled out, and the screen broken into panels.
But I always felt the movie creators were holding back, as if they were somewhat embarrassed about using those print-based elements.
OTOH, foreign movies based on print properties are the place where filmmakers go totally bonkers in adapting those visual cues on a massive scale.
Case in point...Cutie Honey!

Also based on a print comic/manga (Cutey Honey created by the lengendary Go Nagai) this flick is just as lunatic, just as filled with visual cues derived from comics/manga and video games as Scott Pilgrim!
Cutie Honey is a weird, wild, film.
If you liked Scott Pilgrim, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

I Sell the Dead

Take the classy-yet-creepy Hammer / Amicus horror anthology films of the 1960s-70s!
Add some EC Comics-style graphics!
Mix with a cast filled with experienced genre performers who are obviously enjoying the project!
What do you have?
I Sell the Dead!
I came across it yesterday afternoon on cable, and let me tell you, I haven't had an unexpectedly-good time like this in years.
I was expecting SyFy Saturday Night-level crap, good for a laugh and little else.
Instead, I was treated to a well-written, well-produced, well-acted horror flick, the likes of which I haven't seen in (literally) decades!
The last horror anthology worth a second viewing was 1982's CreepShow!
But, this pic, featuring Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings / FlashForward / LOST), Ron Perlman (Beauty & the Beast / Teen Titans, etc), and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm), along with lesser-known, but no less talented, thespians, is an absolute blast!
While it's a "period piece", it's not historically or geographically-accurate. (But then, neither were Hercules and Xena, and nobody I know complained...)
What's it about?
About 85 minutes. ;-)
It's also about grave-robbing, zombies/ghouls, vampires, extraterrestrials, insane inbred families, sea monsters, corrupt businessmen, and hot homicidal women.
It's also extremely funny. Not the laugh-at-how-bad-it-is funny of Plan 9 from Outer Space, but witty puns, quips and tasteless jokes!
And, there's even a comic book version of it!
Watch it! Rent it! Buy it!
You won't regret it!

Jessica Alba's lost tv series...Now on DVD!

The first tv series starring Jessica Marie Alba (usually in a swimsuit) is finally on DVD!
Flipper: the New Adventures: Season 1 is now available as one of MGM-TV's "Manufacture on Demand" DVDs for movies and tv series that MGM feels wouldn't sell as mass-market items, but could sell as limited-release DVD-R releases (like the Warner Archive dvds).
Hopefully, if it sells well enough, MGM might issue a blu-ray version...
Note: This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.
This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video \"play only\" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.
Interestingly, the series has been released in Japan as a mass market item (albeit as half-season sets...)
I am ordering the MoD set, but I'm also looking into getting the Japanese sets (used, if possible), since I have a multi-region player which can handle the Region 2 dvds.

NY Times Reviews Law & Order: UK (and Freema Agyeman)!

From the review of Law & Order: UK by Mike Hale...
"The standouts so far are Bradley Walsh (Coronation Street), who gets the right blend of humor and resignation in the Paul Sorvino-Jerry Orbach veteran detective slot, and Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones of Dr. Who), who covers several bases as the junior prosecutor. "She’s both the minority idealist, played for three seasons by Richard Brooks..."
"...and the hot babe who often solves the case, played by a succession of actresses (none hotter than Ms. Agyeman)." (emphasis mine)
But then, we at Atomic Kommie Comics™ already knew that!
