Reading Room D-DAY with BLACKHAWK, SGT FURY, and SGT ROCK!

It was damned crowded 80 years ago today at Normandy Beach!

Blackhawk and his team were there, battling (what else?) giant Nazi war machines and revealing their secret origin!

Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos were there (although the cover was a "cheat", since they swam in using SCUBA gear a couple of nights before, knocked out Nazi defenses and communications, then proceeded to the invasion site from inside France)!

And Sgt Rock was there, leading Easy Company into the thick of it!

Space Hero Saturdays BLACKHAWK "Battle on the Moon"

Since today is Veterans Day, let's look at the post-war adventures of a team of WWII vets...

...as these Commie-crushing Russkie-Smashers fight for freedom everywhere on Earth...and beyond!

BTW, note the Blackhawks don't walk around the airless vacuum on the Moon's surface in the story itself wearing just their leather uniforms with helmets!
(Nor does the leggy Russkie woman wear just her shorts!)

Though the writer of this never-reprinted tale from Quality's Modern Comics #99 (1950) is unknown, it's illustrated by penciller John Forte and inker Chuck Cuidera.
The "Dark Knights", as they're often referred to, went whole-heartedly after Russkie and Chinese Communists during the post-World War II days of their Quality Comics run.
But, when the characters continued at DC after Quality closed up shop, other opponents like mad scientists, aliens, and the occasional ex-Nazi, took center stage, along with newly-created super villains until the middle-aged aviators became superheroes/spies in the Swinging '60s as shown

 HERE!

(You truly have to see it to believe it!)

Trivia: John Forte is better-known to present-day comics readers as the primary artist on the first few years of The Legion of Super-Heroes' run in Adventure Comics, while Blackhawk co-creator Chuck Cuidera remained on the strip after DC took it over, almost to the very end of the Silver Age run!
Plus, Cuidera inked Dick Dillin (who penciled almost all the DC Blackhawk stories) on Dillin's Hawkman run after Blackhawk was cancelled!
And, in an ironic turn, that the Blackhawks adopted uniforms surprisingly-similar to the Russkies' outfits in this story when they entered a "scientific adventurer" phase in the early 1960s...

..yet nobody noticed!
(Of course it was over a decade later...)

Celebrate D-Day...by Reading Comics/Graphic Novels!

It's the anniversary of D-Day, when the Allies, led by America, invaded Fortress Europa...

...and we at Atomic Kommie Comics had our "brother-in-arms" RetroBlog War: Past Present and Future post numerous graphic tales of that epic day, beginning with Marvel's Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos hitting the beach on D-Day!

Yes, it was reprinted in a Marvel Masterworks over a decade ago, but those are extremely-expensive and didn't sell very well, so most of you have never seen this tale from over a half century ago!

We gave equal time to Fury's DC counterpart, Sgt. Rock, presenting his never-reprinted D-Day adventure...which was also the final story illustrated by his co-creator Joe Kubert!

It was really crowded at Normandy on June 6th, 1944 since Blackhawk and his team were also there, so it's only fair we present their never-reprinted D-Day adventure...which also doubles as their previously-unrevealed origin...at Hero Histories!

The EC Comics crew, best known for sci-fi and horror, also did a story about D-Day...by three ex-military personnel as seen HERE!

And one of their crew, who served in the Merchant Marine before becoming a paratrooper, did this tale  about our paratroopers on D-Day...

Starting next week, our annual Mini-Blogathons will be back...

We had so much D-Day material available, that we've decided to use some of it for the blogathons, beginning with Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos hitting the beach on D-Day!

Steven Spielberg Wants to Adapt BLACKHAWK...Again!

In 1982, fresh off the success of...

 ...Steven Spielberg announced he wanted to adapt DC's Blackhawk...into a feature film!

Problem was that DC wasn't currently publishing a Blackhawk comic!

In fact, the series had been cancelled (for the second time) in 1977!

DC not only revived the series in 1982...

...re-setting it back in the 1940s, but they also commissioned a prose novel based on the comic!

Bookstore managers didn't put the novel with other comics adaptations!

(Both DC and Marvel were doing prose series in the late 1970s-early 1980s)

Instead, the book was racked with the military/war fiction titles, where it sat...and sat...and sat...making it a pricy HTF collectible today!

The comic, despite not being promoted by DC, actually sold well enough to stave off cancellation until 273 in 1984, by which time, Spielberg was already working on other projects!

It was the last time the original group appeared intact in comics.

Since Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1984, there have been various revamps and reboots of the Blackhawk concept, none of which would, I think, appeal to Spielberg.
