Space Hero Saturdays STAR HUNTERS "Part 1: The Farrell Alternative" Conclusion

...swashbucking Donovan Flint, after single-handedly rescuing a vital Earth-bound shipment of fresh food from space pirates, is invited to a meeting with Director Farrell of The Corporation.
But when he arrives, the smiling rogue discovers getting out will be much harder than getting in...
We want to apologize for this post being a week late.
This was supposed to appear last week, and Jumpin' Jupiter was supposed to appear this week.
But the birth of my first grand-niece took priority and my assistant couldn't follow my terrible handwriting on a post-it about which post went when and things went "futzy"!
Note about this story...though this never-reprinted tale appeared in the double-sized DC Super-Stars V2 #18 (1977), it's actually the first of two regular-sized issues of the proposed series which were cobbled together.
You'll see the other one in the near-future...and this time on the correct order!

Space Hero Saturdays STAR HUNTERS Intro and "Part 1: The Farrell Alternative"

In the mid-1970s, tv/movie sci-fi experienced a revival...
...and comics, as they had done since the late 1940s, jumped on the pop culture bandwagon!
But, instead of doing adaptations of popular shows like Space: 1999 (Charlton), or movies like Star Wars (Marvel), DC decided to do a couple of original series using talented, young, up-and-coming creatives.
One of them was The Survivors...I mean The Outcasts...er, make that Donovan Flint: StarHunter...or finally, The Star Hunters!
Here's the explanation of how the project came about, from DC Super-Stars V2N18 (1977)...
And now, from that never-reprinted issue...

Reading Room MYSTERY IN SPACE "The Following Program is Pre-Recorded"

In this era of podcasts, which will be on the internet as long as the servers storing them operate...,
...such a tale as this might seem passe...except for the ending!
Appearing in the final issue (#117) of DC's Mystery in Space in 1981, written by B S Watson, penciled by Don Newton, and inked by Steve Mitchell, the story takes the "last man on Earth" scenario to an unbelievably-narcissistic level!
I mean, he's the last person alive and all he can think of doing is recording and transmitting himself?
Sad...

Reading Room STAR HUNTERS "Part 2: Beyond the Solar Rim" Conclusion

...nervous computer expert Mindy Yano spacewalks to a heavily-armed drone, intending to disarm it before the automated killer can destroy the starship SunRider that Mindy shares with the rest of The Corporation's black-ops team...
Thus ends the Star Hunters' premiere adventure written by David Michelene, penciled by Don Newton, and inked by Bob Layton.
After this never-reprinted debut in DC Super-Stars V2 N18 (1977), the Star Hunters series itself would run seven issues, then be cancelled mid-plotline.
The Star Hunters have never reappeared anywhere.
But, in the final issue, two other Michelene-created characters, StarFire II and Claw the Unconquered, whose solo books had just been cancelled, were ported over to Star Hunters, tying the three series together.
Both of those characters have since reappeared in several of the DC Universe's reboots since then.
But Donovan Flint, and the rest of his team are still in limbo.

Reading Room STAR HUNTERS "Part 2: Beyond the Solar Rim"

...a black ops team consisting of talented, but somewhat eccentric, specialists heads into space.

Well, that can't be good...
Be here tomorrow for the thrilling finale, and see if Yano will survive her first space walk...
It appears this was originally intended as the second issue of Star Hunters, before being combined with the first issue in the double-sized comic DC Super-Stars V2 #18 (1977), to cover more ground at one time during the audience's intro to the characters.

TIME WARP WEEK "Union in Steel"

Welcome to the finale of Time Warp Week...
...as we conclude our week-long look at DC's short-lived 1979-1980 sci-fi anthology.
Using both established pros and talented newcomers, this oversized anthology (68 pages for $1 when the standard comic was 36 pages for 40¢) presented all-new material, almost all of which (including this story) has never been reprinted!
The penciler on this tale, Don Newton, was one of the best of the fan-turned-pros of the 70s-80s.
Unfortunately, a heart attack cut his career and his life short and he passed in 1984.
BTW, most people don't realize he didn't break into comics until he was 40!
There's a really kool site dedicated to Don HERE.
Mike Kaluta, definitive artist for the comic version of The Shadow, provided pulp-style covers for the entire run.
While they had no relation to any of the stories in the book, they were spectacular!
