D-Day 75th Anniversary "Part 5: The Landing"

...and the action is about to get hot and heavy!
Let's dive right in!
Illustrated by the highly-underrated George Evans, this chapter appeared as a backup in Gilberton's World Around Us #31 (1961).
This particular issue was subtitled "Hunting", but the stand-alone lead tales in the front had little relationship to the serials in the back of the book!

D-Day 75th Anniversary "Part 3: The Decision"

...tension rises as the make-or-break deadline approaches!
Will the Allies attack or wait?
Spoiler: they don't wait!
Illustrated by the highly-underrated George Evans, this chapter appeared as a backup in Gilberton's World Around Us #29 (1960).
This particular issue was subtitled "Vikings", but the stand-alone lead tales in the front had little relationship to the serials (including this and "Red Planet Mars") in the back of the book!

D-Day 75th Anniversary "Part 1: Key to Victory"

...today, artist George Evans expands on that feature with a multi-part serial about the invasion of Normandy, along with a recap of events setting the stage...
Illustrated by the highly-underrated George Evans, this chapter appeared as a backup in Gilberton's World Around Us #27 (1960).
This particular issue was subtitled "Illustrated Story of High Adventure", but the stand-alone lead tales in the front had little relationship to the serials in the back of the book!

D-Day 75th Anniversary "The Normandy Invasion"

Here's a never-reprinted short about June 6th, 1944's historic event...
...from Gilberton's Classics Illustrated Special Issue #166A (1962)
Considered one of the most accurate artists to render military comics, George Evans presents a brief, concise mini-feature about the turning point in World War II!
But that's not all, folks!
Tomorrow through Thursday, we'll be doing a crossover event between us and our "brother" RetroBlog War: Past, Present & Future...a six-part never-reprinted serial about the D-Day invasion featuring more amazingly-detailed art by George Evans (and other Fleagle Gang members)!
It'll begin here tomorrow with Part 1, linking to Part 2 on War: Past, Present & Future the same day, and following the same pattern on Wednesday and Thursday for the remaining chapters!
Don't miss it!
BTW, see our previous D-Day tribute posts HERE!
And yes, we're back after an unplanned hiatus due to almost dying.
(Actually, my heart did stop for about two minutes, but I was brought back from "walking into the light", as they say!)
I'm better now, and eager to present more time-lost stuff to you eager readers!

Happy 75th Birthday, Caped Crusader!

It was 75 years ago this week that criminals first stammered "Th...th...th...BAT-MAN!"
Thank you, Bob Kane...and Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson & Gardner Fox.
Above art by Bob Kane, scanned from recently-discovered page proofs of Detective Comics #27 (1939), is his first appearance in a story.
(He's also on the first page of the tale, but in silhouette.)
BTW, those first-generation proofs as close as any of us will ever get to the long-lost original art.

Art by Francesco Francavilla
You can hear the original October 30, 1938 radio broadcast HERE!
And a 10-minute funky dance remix of the radio show HERE!
BONUS: Here's a kool documentary from the radio show's 60th Anniversary, narrated by James (Avatar) Cameron...

75th Anniversary of the Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

Let's look at how the amazing aviatrix was portrayed in comics...
Though cover-dated August, 1937, the issue this one-pager by Stookie Allen appeared in (Dell Comics' The Funnies #11) was probably produced in March (when Amelia made her first attempt at an around-the-world flight), and on-sale in May or June, shortly before her ill-fated second attempt.
So the reference about the writer/artist "pulling for her" was probably in reference to her first attempt.
The other comic stories we're presenting were done after she disappeared on July, 2, 1937...
This story from True Comics #52 (1946) has one interesting mis-statement.
See if you can find it...
Did you catch it?
The next-to-last panel should read "Two hours later...", not "Two days later"
Our final tale is from an installment of the ongoing non-fiction feature Wonder Women of History that appeared in Wonder Woman #23 (1947), illustrated by Robert Sale...
Rest in Peace, Ms. Earhart.

75th Anniversary of John Dillinger's Death!

Famous Gangsters comic cover showing John Dillinger's death in the alley of the Biograph Theater

On July 1st, Michael Mann's new film Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger opens across America, less than a month before the 75th anniversary of Dillinger's death on July 22, 1934.
(Is that great timing, or what?)

Before it does, have a look at John Dillinger in Pop Culture, a cool webpage with links to resources including the official FBI webpage about Dillinger, pages about movies (including Public Enemies) and other media portraying the legendary bank robber, and kool kollectibles (t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, messenger bags, etc.) emblazoned with Dillinger comic covers (including the one above) and movie posters from the 1930s thru the 1960s!
