Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST: EASTER STORY "Resurrection"

Under this Scott McDaniel cover...
...is one of the most unusual tales Marvel Comics ever told!
(And that's saying a lot!)
Written by Louise Simonson, pencilled by Mary Wilshire and Colleen Doran, and inked by Bill Anderson, this 1993 one-shot, co-published by Thomas Nelson Publishers is a companion volume to The Christmas Story by the same creative team, published earlier that year.
Easter Story tells the tale from Christ's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to this final chapter, though we're running only the section taking place on Easter here.
If you'd like to buy a copy of the HTF comic, you can find it HERE.

Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST "Christmas Story" Epilogue

Up to this point, you've read what everybody knows about the Birth of Christ...

...now, here's what most presentations in print, TV, movies, etc, don't cover...

Marvel and Nelson Publishing's joint imprint, Nelson Comics, published a sequel issue called Life of Christ "Easter Story", which we'll run around (obviously) Easter!
BTW, the cover shown above was from a special reprint done for the Christian Broadcasting Network! which is now part of ABC's FreeForm network.

Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST "Christmas Story" Conclusion

When Last We Left the Newly-Born Christ Child...

...there were about to be uninvited guests.
But will they bring joy or terror?
(Hey, it is a Marvel comic!)

This is as far as the story usually goes.
But there is more, which you'll see...

Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST "Christmas Story" Part 2

...actually, we haven't seen this part, but it will occur later in this chapter.
Though Mary discovered she was pregnant before the marriage, she and Joseph were wed after an angel appeared to him and explained his bride-to-be was still a virgin and that she had been impregnated by God.
Meanwhile, three wise men begin their journey by following a new star in the sky, prophesied to be the beacon to the newborn King of the Jews...
The Tale Concludes Tomorrow,
Christmas Day!

Since it's a Marvel comic we thought it appropriate to end this chapter on a cliffhanger!
Note: If these guys are so wise, why does a kid see through Herod, but not them?

Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST "Christmas Story" Part 1

Did ya know Mighty Marvel published Jesus Christ's origin story, true believer?
You didn't?
Well, here's where we correct that lapse in your knowledge of literature...
So where's the title character?
Find Out on Thursday!
After all, it's
Christmas Eve!
Marvel/Nelson Comics' Life of Christ #1 (1993) was one of several titles in a joint publishing venture between Marvel and Thomas Nelson Publishers, one of the largest publishers of Christian-themed materials.
Between 1992 and 1994, the imprint published Christian-themed comic books including one-shots like this and a short-lived super-hero series, Illuminator.
The project ended due to low sales.

Holiday Reading Room SANTA CLAUS FUNNIES "First Christmas Tree"

An never-reprinted tale from Dell's first Santa Claus Funnies (1942)...

...details a "legend" (involving young Jesus Christ) about how the tradition of Christmas trees came to be!
Well, it's as plausible as any theory that combines Christianity with the pagan tradition of decorated fir trees...
If the artwork looks "classier" than the usual comic book art, that's because illustrator Arthur Jameson was already a major artist in the pulp magazine field when he debuted in comic books with this tale!
As a result, his work was largely confined to fairy tale-themed and holiday comics.
