Friday Holiday Fun EASTER WITH MOTHER GOOSE

Here's a short story featuring a plethora of fairy tale characters...
...as presented by a (then) future superstar of the comic strip or, (if you want to be pretentious) graphic novel form!
The title story from Dell's Four Color Comics #103: Easter with Mother Goose (1946) was written and illustrated by Walt Kelly, whose signature series Pogo wouldn't debut for another three years.
Trivia:
While Pogo as a stand-alone series began in 1949, various characters including Pogo himself and Albert the Alligator had appeared as supporting characters in other Walt Kelly-written and drawn strips since 1941.
Besides doing an annual comic of Easter stories featuring fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters celebrating the holiday, Walt also did an even-more popular series of annual Christmas comics utilizing the same concept!

Monday Madness / Easter Reading Room EASTER WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Easter Bunny and the Dwarf"

...so just sit back and enjoy the never-reprinted tale from Dell's Four Color Comics: Easter with Mother Goose #140 (1947) without any guilt!
This story, written and illustrated by Walt (Pogo) Kelly features a number of nursery rhyme characters including Jack and Jill (who went up a hill), Little Jack Horner, and Mother Goose herself.
But, it is not, as was often the case with Kelly's holiday pieces, an adaptation of existing nursery rhymes, but a totally-new tale!
It's also a prequel to the book's main tale featuring an Easter party...which you'll see on Easter Sunday!

...as told by the legendary Walt (Pogo) Kelly in Dell's Four Color Comics: Easter with Mother Goose #140 (1947)
"Fudgy-wudgy" indeed!

Reading Room / Halloween Horror ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN "Civic Spirit"

Some of the tales of this year's Presidential campaign are so unbelievable...
...you'd think they were taken from a comic book!
Written by Richard Hughes, penciled by Bob Lubbers, and inked by John Celardo, this tale of ghosts, graft, and government appeared in ACG's Adventures into the Unknown #10 (1950).
If only we could use such supernatural solutions to remove real-life grifters from local, state, and federal office...

Segregationist George C Wallace: the Comic Book!

50 years ago today, Alabama Governor George C Wallace made history...
...by attempting to defy the Federal Government's order to de-segregate Alabama schools.
(He backed down when he realized that the Feds meant business.)
Wallace was so proud of his segregationist attitudes that he had them included in a comic book produced in 1960 during his election campaign!
These pages are excerpts of the 16-page comic considered instrumental in Wallace's victory in 1960.
You can see the complete comic HERE.
You'll note an emphasis on "states' rights" of the sort Tea Partiers advocate as well as the paranoid fear that the Feds wanted to "take over" Alabama.
BTW, In his inaugural speech after winning the race, Wallace promised "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."
Note: Ironically, Wallace was a Democrat.
However, Federally-forced desegregation as well as the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 caused many racist Democrats to switch to the Republican Party (which began catering to the right-wing audience with the "Southern Strategy") or, as in the case of Wallace, joining the newly-created American Independent Party.
In the late 1970s, Wallace became a born-again Christian and recanted his racist attitudes.

Christine O'Donnell--Which Witch was Which?

When a clip from Bill Maher's old series Politically Incorrect surfaced showing Tea Party candidate Christine O'Donnell's admission that she "dabbled into witchcraft"...

..it positively inspired me to do a campaign poster for her targeting an audience sadly neglected by the Tea Party up to now!
I've even given it it's own shop HERE, filled with t-shirts, mugs, magnets, messenger bags, and other collectible goodies just perfect for upcoming rallies!
PLUS: I did an extra-large version as seen HERE...
...for those times when you REALLY want to get your point across!
No need to thank me!
