Monday Madness GHOSTLY TALES "Anywhere Machine!"

This starts out as a hard sci-fi adventure...

...but it ends as an entirely different genre!
The title of the comic should tip you off as to what genre!
At this point, Charlton had cancelled their sci-fi anthologies, so this story by writer Nick Cuti, layout artist Wally Wood, and penciler-inker Tom Sutton ended up in Ghostly Tales #107 (1973)!
You'll note the addition of the book's host, Mr L Dead, to the splash and a couple of captions.
When the tale was reprinted in Charlton's revived Space War #30 (1978)...

...Deth was gone!
Note: the cover by Wayne Howard, who started his career working for Wally Wood, has never been reprinted!

Reading Room TIME WARP "Survivors"

Even in the future, there's one inviolable rule about volunteering...
...never, ever, do it!
I love switch-endings.
Writer Mike W Barr and illustrator Tom Sutton do a bang-up job worthy of the classic EC comics Weird Science and Weird Fantasy!
The late Tom Sutton was both extremely versatile and extremely under-rated!
He did everything from humor (Not Brand Echh!) to media tie-in sci-fi (Star TrekPlanet of the Apes) to romance (Haunted Love), to horror (Werewolf by Night) and did them all well.
There's a wonderful interview with him HERE that gives real insight into him and why he, sadly, never became a superstar.

Friday Fun NOT BRAND ECHH! "Original Origin of Charlie America!"

It's almost the 4th of July, so we thought we'd kick back and enjoy...
...this spoof of one of the most-retold origins of all ('cause we're really nice guys)!
Admittedly, this ain't exactly how they portrayed his origin in Captain America: the First Avenger.
But hey, this classic from Marvel's Not Brand Echh #3 (1967) is a lotta fun anyway!

Friday Fun ARRGH! "Gerald's World"

Nerds aka fanboys/girls like us weren't always socially-acceptable!

In fact, in the pre-Internet (heck, even pre-VCR days), we were downright reviled and shunned!
Read this tale filled (albeit lovingly) with the geek stereotypes of two generations ago!

Written and illustrated by the extremely-underrated Tom Sutton, this never-reprinted story from Marvel's ARRGH! #2 (1975) displays two of his trademark motifs, horror and humor!
This was an attempt to do a new MAD-style four-color comic due to the early 1970s loosening of editorial restrictions by the Comics Code Authority!
Sadly, the book only lasted five issues...

Reading Room WORLDS UNKNOWN "Doorstep"

We've been showing aliens who dare to land on Earth "who's the boss" for centuries...
...but this is one time that may not have been the best approach!
Adapted from a short story by Keith Laumer, this tale from Marvel's Worlds Unknown #2 (1973) has a kool "Twilight Zone" twist ending, but couldn't have been adapted for the show due to the crudeness of tv special effects work at the time.
OTOH, writer Gerry Conway, penciler Gil Kane, and inker Tom Sutton had no such constraints, and they do EC Comics' writers and artists proud with a tale that would have fit right in with Weird ScienceWeird Fantasy, or the merged Weird Science-Fantasy books!

CoronaVirus Comics EERIE "Masque of the Red Death!"

Wow!
It's scary how many adaptations there are of Edgar Allen Poe's classic story...
...including this one from Warren's Eerie Magazine #12 (1967)!
Adapted by writer/editor Archie Goodwin and illustrated by Tom Sutton, this tale is one of the looser versions we've run.
But, at the same time, it's one of the more effective ones at evoking the mood and visceral terror the story requires!
