Reading Room / Tales Twice-Told TERROR TALES "Horror Bugs"

Last Tuesday, We Presented a Frightening Future by Simon & Kirby HERE!
Now, We Present Another Artist's Version of That Same Story!

Illustrated by Antonio Reynoso, this retelling from Eerie Publications' Terror Tales V5N6 (1973) of Simon & Kirby's "Slaughter-House" shows the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) of editor Carl Burgos.
  • Find an old story from a now-defunct publisher that hadn't been reprinted since the 1950s.
  • Use the original script almost verbatim, usually making a couple of changes in the opening and closing narratives and assigning it to one of the team of talented South American artists hired to work at rates lower than US illustrators!
  • "Update" it, making technology and aliens look like what tv/movies were currently showing.
  • And, in this case, making one of the primary characters in the originally all-White cast a Black guy!
Curiously, though most of these reworked versions were reprinted throughout the publisher's various titles, usually a year after the previous publication, this story was only run once!

Friday Fun: CALVIN

The Black Panther was not the first Black Marvel character to get a cover-featured series!
He wasn't even the second!
He was the third!
First was Luke Cage, who received his own title...
...and was the star of his own Netflix series!
Note: Though the series ended, three of the stars have gone on to headline other shows...
Simone Missick (Misty Knight) on All RiseMike Colter (Luke Cage) on Evil and Rosario Dawson (Clare Temple/Night Nurse) on the upcoming Ahsoka!
(BTW, Luke Cage is now available on Disney+!)
The second character was...
WHO???
Several months before Prince T'Challa took over a reprint book, Jungle Action, and began a memorable series that served as part of the plot of the billion-dollar blockbuster movie...
...this character took over another reprint book and began a series that nobody remembers!
You can read every never-reprinted tale featuring Calvin and his buddies HERE!
What makes the strip even more fascinating, beyond the vaudeville-level humor, is the identity of the writer-artist behind it!
"Kevin Banks" was not a pseudonym for an already-established creative, but an editorial staffer at Marvel in the early 1970s who received his "big break" with this strip!
Trivia: Kevin was the first (and so far, onlyMarvel creator to have a head shot illustration on an on-going series!
Even the ever-amazing comics researcher Nick Caputo could find little about the mysterious Mr Banks, as seen HERE.
What did Banks did after working at Marvel?
Did he work in advertising?
Become an art instructor?
Switch careers and become an accountant or fireman?
We may never know the answer...

BTW, this is our 5,000th post!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder NIOURK Chapter 13: Alpha

When Last We Saw the Black Child (as he calls himself)...

(Note: This comic is a relic the character finds in the ruins.
Weird how it's in VF to NM shape, eh?)

...he reaches the ruins of New York City (Niourk) and encounters robots who examine him, finding anomalies from normal human readings.
But, there are scientifically-advanced humans (from Earth's colony on Mars which survived the catastrophe), in the city!
They find the Black Child, unconscious, and bring him back to their improvised base in the city to be treated...

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder NIOURK Chapter 8: Niourk

We Have Already Seen...

...after numerous harrowing experiences, and gaining an intelligent bear as a traveling companion, the Black Child (as he calls himself) arrives at his destination...
Are these robots and devices merely running automatically?
Or is there an intelligence (organic or mechanical) guiding them?
NEXT WEDNESDAY
to find out!

Adapted by writer/artist Olivier Vatine from the novel by Stefan Wul, Niourk is a superb graphic novel deserving of a place on your bookshelf!
