Reading Room STARSTREAM "City"

Here's a tangled tale of time travel...

...based on the prose short story "A Nice Place to Visit" by Stephen Goldin.

Adapted by Silver Age comics veteran Arnold Drake and illustrated by Jose Delbo, this story was part of the 1976 anthology mini-series Starstream, Western Publishing's move away from the Gold Key imprint and branding to create a less-juvenile presence in newsstands, supermarket magazine racks, and bookstores.

Note: there were less than a dozen dedicated comic book shops in America in 1976!

The 64-page anthologies featured comic adaptations of short stories by noted (and marketable) authors like Isaac Asimov, Jack Williamson, Theodore Sturgeon, A E van Vogt, and Anne McCaffrey, with a couple of non-adaptation stories by Arnold Drake and series editor Roger Elwood to fill out the page count.

Sadly, the project, which came out a year before Star Wars was released, disappeared within six months.

Monday Madness / Halloween Horror THE SPECTRE "Hit and Run!"

Our final pre-Halloween entry...

...is from the final issue of The Spectre's stint as a horror host de-powered from being one of the DC Universe's most powerful characters!

No wonder God "demoted" the Spectre!

Writer Steve Skeates and artist Jose Delbo showed that, despite once being a near-omnipotent entity, the Ghostly Guardian is still...only human!

BTW, this issue also had an usual text feature...its' own obituary by DC's resident historian, Mark Hanerfeld!

The Spectre did return, and sacrifice his...existence...to save both Earth One and Earth-Two in the Justice League's annual team-up with the Justice Society in DC's JLA #82-83 (1970).

Reading Room: EXPLORERS IN THE UNKNOWN "Runaway Asteroid""

These are the voyages of the Hunter I, it's ongoing mission...

...to fill four pages per issue of Gold Key's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

The Hunter I crew had adventures set in the near-future of the late 1990s-early 2000s, much like then-current films like Green Slime, Wild Wild Planet, and Battle in Outer Space.

With only four pages per issue, there was little character development (or even names) for the crew, but lots of action!

The entire never-reprinted series was written by Dick Wood, and this tale from VttBotS #15 (1969) was illustrated by Jose Delbo, who entered the business in 1965, worked for practically everybody at one point or another, and retired in 1996 with over 800 stories and covers to his credit.
