Design of the Week "BAH, HUMBUG!"

For the Christmas season, we've brought back one of our most popular features: posting a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
Express your true feelings about the holiday season!

Say what you feel!
"Bah, Humbug!"
Say it on hot cocoa mugs, ornaments, sweatshirts, hoodies (both light AND dark!), and MANY other goodies!
Give the gift that keeps on giving, even if you, personally, don't!

The Woman Who (Believe It or Not) LOVED Scrooge!

When you think of Ebenezer Scrooge, "lovable" is probably the last word you'd associate with him.
Yet, one woman gave her heart to him...was engaged to him...and had her heart broken by him!
Her name was Belle!
She appears twice in A Christmas Carol, during Scrooge's journey with the Ghost of Christmas Past.

First, we see how the young Scrooge choose between his love of money and love of her.
Second, we see how, after their breakup, she married a good man and together they raised a loving family, giving Scrooge a look at what "might have been" had he chosen to remain with her!

Almost every dramatic adaptation (radio/tv/movie) shows the first incident, but omits the second scene (usually due to time constraints), thus many people have never known how Belle's life turned out after Scrooge left her!
(You'd be surprised how many people never actually read the story, only seen or heard the tv, film and audio versions!)

Most of the illustrators of the many editions that have been printed over the decades have also bypassed the conclusion of Belle's plotline.
But not legendary illustrator Arthur Rackham!
He did not one, but two color illustrations in the 1915 edition just for the short conclusion to Belle's story in Stave Two!
And we at Atomic Kommie Comics™ just had to include both of them in our A Christmas Carol collection!
One, Belle & Children shows Scrooge's once-love playing with her kids.
The other, Belle's Family portrays the children crowding around their father (whom Scrooge could have been, had he chosen differently) as he comes home, laden with presents!

They're absolutely beautiful pieces, some of the best work Rackham ever produced!
Enjoy!

Christmas at Ground Zero---It's Earlier than You Think!

At this time of year, Christmas carols are in continuous rotation on radio stations and in the Atomic Kommie Comics™ office.
(Remember when this didn't happen until after Thanksgiving?)
One of our favorites is Christmas at Ground Zero by "Weird" Al Yankovic.
(You were expecting maybe Adeste Fidelis?)

Which brings us to, perhaps, the most unusual theme for potential Christmas presents (and, you gotta admit, we've had some real weirdies!)...atomic Armageddon!
BTW, our apologies...the brand-new link directly from YouTube does a weird re-routing, so you have to click on the video embed to go directly to YouTube instead of being able to watch it on the blog!
Within our sci-fi-oriented The Future WAS Fantastic!™ section is the Atomic War line of kool collectibles with classic comic book covers from the fear-filled '50s, featuring the nuclear destruction of New York City (see above), Washington DC, and Moscow on black hoodies, sweats, and tees, as well as mugs and other tchochkies!
So for all you survivalists out there, while you duck n' cover under the Christmas tree, prepare for the irradiated end stylishly with our radiation-proof (not really!) garb and goodies!

CYBER-SANTA: the Future of Cool Christmas Cards

Want to send a Christmas card that's future-forward but also retro-kool?
My personal favorite is the one shown above: Santa Claus 2.0 where Future Santa (note the four arms!) meets his replacement...Cyber-Santa!
In the late 1950s-early 1960s we thought there was nothing science couldn't improve...including Santa Claus!
Galaxy Magazine's primary artist in this era (both covers and interiors) was Ed Emshwiller, who signed his work "Emsh".
Known for both playfullness and superb detail, Ed did a series of Christmas covers from 1951 to 1960 featuring a four-armed Santa in the future celebrating the Yuletide with humans and aliens alike!
They're included in our collection along with numerous comic book covers featuring Santa in the past, present, and future!
Order now, to have plenty of time to send them out!
(I normally don't start promoting Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, but expected shipping delays and potential shortages of blank card stock make me do so to be sure customers can get what they want, when they want it!)

Out Doing Christmas Shopping...

...so here's a feature from Dell's Four Color Comics #867 (1942)...
...which was part of the Santa Claus Funnies series that ran every year for over a decade!

Give Your Loved One a Batman Christmas!

Want to give your Batman-obsessed loved one (and we all have at least one) a "Batty" Christmas?

Combine the blu ray (or dvd) set ...

...with a not-available-in-stores digitally-restored reproduction of a 1966 Carmine Infantino/Murphy Anderson promo piece...
...created in 1966 to hype the then-new tv show!
Ironically, the visual looks more like a huge flat-screen tv than the small cathode-ray tv tubes of the 1960s!
Available in a variety of formats to fit both decor and budget!

Secrets of Santa Claus!

DID YOU KNOW...the image of Santa Claus, as we Americans know it, is based on the work of two artists over 70 years apart?
1) Thomas Nast, who illustrated the first published version of Clement Clark Moore's The Night Before Christmas in the 1860s
and
2) Haddon Sundblom, who took Nast's visual concepts, refined them, and used them to illustrate Coca-Cola's Christmas advertising campaigns from the 1930s onward!
TRIVIA:
Both Nast and Sundblom are equally famous for their other artistic accomplishments...
Nast was primarily a political cartoonist, whose illustrations of New York's "Boss" Tweed were considered the main reason the corrupt politician was forced from office!
Sundblom also created the image of the Quaker Oats man, and was a noted pin-up girl artist! (In fact, his last published artwork was a pin up girl semi-dressed in a Santa outfit for Playboy's December, 1972 cover!)

We at Atomic Kommie Comics™ offer a dozen different renderings of 'ol Kris Kringle which follow in the visual tradition of Nast and Sundblom, on a host of Cool Christmas™ collectibles ranging from tree ornaments to hot cocoa mugs to snugglies, sweatshirts and hoodies for kids and adults!
While they range from paintings to comic book cover art, they all feature the "classic" image of Santa known to Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials!
So give your "special someone", whether they're a spouse, lover, friend, or relative, a warm feeling this Christmas with a kool kollectible featuring the personification of the Christmas Spirit--Santa Claus!

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...Space Santa (note the four arms!) listens to a cute alien child telling him what he/she/it wants for Christmas!
In the late 1950s-early 1960s we thought there was nothing science couldn't improve...including Santa Claus!
Galaxy Magazine's primary artist (both covers and interiors) in this era was Ed Emshwiller, who signed his work "Emsh".

Design of the Week NEGRO ROMANCE

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...with Valentine's Day rapidly-approaching, here's a unique design for your loved one!
In the mid-1950s, with superheroes and horror stories all but eliminated from comics, other genres dominated!
Westerns, war, sci-fi, teen humor, and romance now filled the comics racks.
The big problem was finding a way to stand out from the crowd!
Fawcett (and Charlton, who bought a lot of Fawcett properties when they went out of business) were willing to take a crack at the untapped African-American teen/young adult audience.
Sadly, the book only ran four issues.
But, you can read the stories that appeared in this issue HERE!
Note: This design is the only comic art cover in the series (the rest were photo covers using models).
Besides being a kool retro romace cover, suitable as a Valentine's Day gift, it would also make an appropriate gift for someone celebrating Black History Month!
Check out the whole line of Kool Kollectibles HERE!

Space: the FInal Frontier (for Christmas Gifts)!

Since the 1890s, and the heyday of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, science fiction-themed presents have found a place under the Christmas tree and in Xmas stockings for the young (and young at heart)!
Continuing that entertaining tradition, Atomic Kommie Comics™ is proud to offer our line of retro-design sci-fi/fantasy collectibles, The Future WAS Fantastic!™, for both kids AND adults!
We're talking 12-month calendars, mousepads, mugs, magnets, t-shirts, sweatshirts and other goodies featuring some of the niftiest illustrations from the comic books, pulp magazines, and movie posters of the 1930s-1960s, all digitally-restored and remastered!
Spaceships with wings and big fins!
Ray Guns that can zap an entire army in a flash!
Slimy Aliens!
Killer Robots!
Heroes in bubble-helmeted tight spacesuits!
Heroines in even tighter space suits!
Never did the future look so...stylish!
If you're looking for something in the vein of Star Wars or Star Trek (You did know that George Lucas wanted to remake Flash Gordon, but King Features didn't want to trust a young director whose biggest credit at that point was American Graffiti, didn't you?), here's the stuff that provided the visual inspiration for today's hi-tech flights of fantasy!
Enjoy, and may your rocket tubes never overheat...

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!

This week...it's a Yuletide homicide!
A never-reprinted cover from the 1960s featuring the police investigating the apparent demise of Kris Kringle!
Whodunit?
We have no idea, but it'll be a crime if you don't order a kool kollectible using this artwork for a loved one (particularly one in law enforcement) as a fun stocking stuffer!

Make Yuletide 2017 a Kick-Butt Christmas!

In our ongoing quest to suggest cool Christmas gifts for our faithful fans, we of Atomic Kommie Comics™ would like to direct you to, perhaps, the most unlikely of departments--Pop Art Martial Arts™

But, when you think about it, considering how Western-based, cops-and-robbers-oriented, and military-themed toys and gifts have been part of the Yuletide for generations (I'll never forget finding my first 11.5" GI Joe under the tree one Christmas morning back in the 1960s!), it's only natural that martial arts-oriented gifts should also be part of the holiday season!

Beyond the fact that you can't shoot your eye out with a gi, (Note: Do NOT give ninja throwing stars to kids as a present!) all these themes are based on the concept of good triumphing over evil, protecting the helpless, and having fun doing it!
And, martial arts promote physical fitness! ;-)

We offer men's, women's, and kid's garb, as well as stuff to decorate your dojo.

And what a lineup!
Kung Fu Vampires!
The ORIGINAL StreetFighter!
Sister StreetFighter!
Lady Kung Fu!
Deadly China Doll!
Five Fingers of Death!
And, for those who want a Power Rangers-style look with rubber-suited monsters aplenty--Infra-Man!

So, make it a Merry, Martial-Arts Christmas! Ho, Ho, Ho, Hi-Yahh!

Bring Home a Cave Girl This Christmas!

In the 1940s-50s, one of the most popular genres in comics was the "jungle hero", the most famous one of all being Tarzan.
A horde of imitators followed, with some interesting variations, including an entire sub-genre--the "jungle heroine"!
While many had weird names like "Sheena", "Rulah", or "Zoot", one of the best-illustrated was known only as "Cave Girl"!
Rendered by noted "good girl" artist Bob Powell, Cave Girl cut a svelte path thru Africa's villains for four exciting issues!
The Atomic Kommie Comics™ crew has found a home for two of her best covers on shirts, mugs and other stuff in our Heroines™ section.
As a cool retro-styled Christmas gift, she appeals both to guys who enjoy seeing an attractive woman in dynamic action, and gals who like viewing an empowered woman who stands tall and proud in a male-dominated world!
And, you might want to combine one of our collectibles with a spectacular Cave Girl reprint book from Dark Horse Comics!
And, you can check out some of her tales at our fellow RetroBlogs™ HERE and HERE!
So put Cave Girl under the tree or in someone's stocking this Christmas.
But do it quickly, 'cause she won't stay put for long!

Design of the Week THE FIRST CHRISTMAS...in 3-D!

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...it's a never-reprinted comic cover from the 1950, which not only offers a tasteful and beautiful painting of the Nativity scene by legendary sci-fi artist Kelly Freas, but also a kool, kitchy element with the fact it's the cover of a 3-D comic!
BTW, you can read the tale behind the cover HERE!
(Make sure you have your 3-D glasses!)
