Jasmine Amy Rogers for Best Actress in a Musical!!!

Legendary cartoon character Betty Boop has returned to pop culture prominence in a big way...

(Hey, it worked for Little Orphan Annie!)
Photo: Mark Seliger
Starring gorgeous Broadway veteran Jasmine Amy Rogers as the embodiment of Betty,
...the show looks like an absolute hoot!

With award-winning creatives handling writing, directing, and production
(including effects like transitioning the cast and sets from black and white to color on stage), the production appeals to old (who remember the cartoons) and young, who will be introed to the pop art icon!

Errol Flynn's Captain Blood...by the creator of Flash Gordon!

How many of you have seen this classic movie poster...
...and knew it was the work of Alex Raymond, of Flash GordonJungle Jim, and Secret Agent X-9 fame?
Yep!
Since Captain Blood and Arabella Bishop do not look like Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, it's a reasonable bet that this was done as an advance promo piece before casting, but it was so good, the studio still used it as their half-sheet poster for both the initial release and re-releases!
If you look at the original Flash Gordon strip, you'll see Raymond incorporated a lot of pirate/swashbuckler costume, weapon, and design motifs into Flash's adventures on other worlds!

Space Heroine Saturdays BARBARELLA 3.2

Barbarella met a number of inhabitants of the labyrinth surrounding Lythion's capital city, Sogo, including Pygar the blind angel, and Earth scientist Durand.
With their help, Barbarella defeated the LeatherMen and is now en-route to the city itself.

While many elements were adapted into the feature film with minimal alteration, there's one startling difference...Durand, the main villain of the movie, is a good guy in the original comic strip!
More Barbarella soon.

Space Heroine Saturdays BARBARELLA 3.1

It's been a while since we last looked in on Barbarella...
...and you're about to encounter more plot elements and characters you saw in the 1960s movie, but in somewhat different form...
More adventures of Barbarella and Pygar soon...

Space Heroine Saturday BARBARELLA 2.2

With Captain Dildano and the rest of his crew dead, and their ship a derelict, Barbarella is stranded on Lython...

There are more plot elements and characters who ended up in the movie, though at the flick's beginning, rather than midway through the story, as they do here.
Some characters like "Klill, the horrid little Martian", didn't appear in the film.
The explanation of why the inhabitants are dressed in mid-19th Century Earth fashions was utilized a year later in the Classic Star Trek episode "Squire of Gothos".
At any rate, the "antique-looking" clothing and technology didn't make it into the movie's version of this sequence!

Space Heroine Saturdays BARBARELLA 2.1

All you really need to know is that Captain Dildano's spacecraft was forced down by a gigantic jellyfish...ok, plot logic is not the strip's strong suit.
Just enjoy the kool art...
Dildano also dies in the movie, but under vastly different circumstances.
In fact, this particular sequence is not adapted into the 1960s cult classic flick!
More in the near future!

Space Heroine Saturdays BARBARELLA 1.2

Barbarella crash-landed on the planet Lythion where, after a number of...interesting...situations, she managed to reunite two long-feuding races, ending their centuries-long war.
With her ship destroyed, the amazing woman gets a lift from a conveniently-arriving space freighter and is off to another astounding adventure on other worlds...

We'll return to Barbarella in the near future...after we catch our breath...
It's interesting to see various plot elements and characters that Roger Vadim and Claude Brulé re-composited in the 1960s movie's script!
Speaking of which...
