Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...He's the man who defends those who can't afford a defender!
He's the Public Defender and he's obviously in Action! (It says so in the title!)
While district attorneys and criminal lawyers tend to get all the attention in fiction, Legal Aid lawyers usually get short shrift, most often as easily-disposed courtroom opposition for lead characters in various Law & Order series.
There's only been one radio series (Roger Kilgore: Public Defender) and a single tv series (Young Lawyers) about them*.
Oh, and this short-lived comic book series about Richard Manning, who defends those the law has wrongly-accused!
It didn't set the world on fire during it's six-issue run (In fact, it's never been reprinted!), but it did offer a contrast to the usually-infallible police and DAs who never prosecuted an innocent person!
We're promoting our addition of Public Defender in Action to our Crime & Punishment™ line of comic collectibles which includes his across-the-aisle counterpart, Mr District Attorney with a one-week special including items that won't be offered in the regular store!
If you have a friend/relative/loved one who is a Legal Aid lawyer or legal aide, one of these kool kollectibles would make a great kitschy Christmas gift!
Be there for Public Defender!
He'd be there for you!
*The long-running TV series The Guardian, starring Simon Baker, was about a lawyer from a high-end firm forced to perform community service as a Legal Aid consultant after a drug conviction.
Not the same thing. ;-)

Fantastic Femmes--Regina Hall
Considering she didn't begin acting until the age of 26, it's interesting to note that Regina Hall's best-known role (up to now) is teenager Brenda Meeks in the film-spoof Scary Movie series!
She's done a little of everything from situation comedy to soap opera, to slice-of-life drama, and made it all look easy.
Regina's even taken on an iconic character as Trixie Norton, Ed Norton's long-suffering wife, in a movie remake of The Honeymooners, and her performace was one of the few good things in the flick!
Now, she's a dramatic DA in the newest Law & Order series debuting this week!
Talk about versatile!

Fantastic Femmes--Mizuo Peck
New York City native Mizuo Peck's ancestry includes Japanese, Irish, British, and Cherokee, giving her a unique, exotic "look" that's allowed her to play a range of Asian, British, Native American (but not Cherokee), Hispanic, and generic New Yorker characters in film and on tv.
Mizuo's also done off-Broadway theatre, fashion modeling and appeared in a couple of music videos.
Talk about versatile!
No wonder I think she's a Fantastic Femme!

Actually, Mizuo played a mystically-animated statue of Sacgawea, not the historical figure!
So if you want to know who played the real-life person in film and tv, here's the list from the IMDB.

NY Times Reviews Law & Order: UK (and Freema Agyeman)!
From the review of Law & Order: UK by Mike Hale...
"The standouts so far are Bradley Walsh (Coronation Street), who gets the right blend of humor and resignation in the Paul Sorvino-Jerry Orbach veteran detective slot, and Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones of Dr. Who), who covers several bases as the junior prosecutor. "She’s both the minority idealist, played for three seasons by Richard Brooks..."
"...and the hot babe who often solves the case, played by a succession of actresses (none hotter than Ms. Agyeman)." (emphasis mine)
But then, we at Atomic Kommie Comics™ already knew that!

Law & Order: UK...now on Region 1 DVD!
In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups.
The police who investigate crime, and the Crown Prosecutors who prosecute the offenders.
These are their stories.
Sound familiar?
It's the opening narration of the most recent version of the long-running Law & Order franchise.
In fact, it's now in it's second season!
But, if you live in the US, you haven't seen it...until now!
It's Law & Order: UK, produced in England.
Creator Dick Wolf is overseeing the whole thing, but the main writer / producer is former TorchWood and Life on Mars staffer Chris Chibnall.
Plus, it features several genre performers as regulars, including Jamie Bamber (BattleStar Galactica), Harriet Walter (Lord Peter Wimsey / Harriet Vane Mysteries) and...
Fantastic Femme Freema Agyeman (Dr. Who, TorchWood, Survivors)! (Looks good in her barrister's robes, eh?)
(Here's a shot in her "civilian" garb.)
Anyway, I was going thru the Sunday papers (which I pick up after 9pm on Saturday night) and I glanced thru the sale flyers.
The Target Stores flyer usually has a page of new cds and dvds. Sometimes they have exclusives.
They sure did this week...Law & Order:UK for only $26.99!
I went online to target.com and noticed that, after this week, it'll be 39.99, so I'm going to grab it at my local store on Tuesday!
Maybe I'll see you there!

Fantastic Femmes--Nancy Giles
One of the high-points of my weekend is sitting back and watching CBS Sunday Morning while having brunch.
And, one of the too-infrequent joys of that are commentary segments with Nancy Giles.
(While I like Ben Stein, I loathe Mo Rocca, one of the most annoying people to ever appear on-screen. Why CBS doesn't just rotate Nancy and Ben 50-50 is beyond me...)
Though she started out as an actress, with ongoing roles on China Beach and Delta, Nancy seems to have found her niche as a television journalist and commentator, while still doing the occasional supporting tv or film role.
She's also appeared on Broadway and currently writes and performs a one-woman stage show both off-Broadway and regionally.
IMHO, truly a Fantastic Femme!

Fantastic Femmes--Jasika Nicole
I'm hooked on JJ Abrams' Fringe!
One of the best-written and acted shows of the past decade.
John Noble as Walter Bishop is an absolute delight to watch in action. Never a dull moment with that guy!
And the season finale with the alternate universe...WOW!
(JJ does have a thing for alternate realities. Think he's gonna tie in Star Trek and LOST into this potential multiverse?)
But there's a mystery even more elusive than ZFT!
Why doesn't Agent Astrid Farnsworth get MORE screen time?
Jasika Nicole is an extremely-talented actress who can easily hold her own on-screen with Noble, Joshua Jackson, or Anna Torv!
C'mon Abrams, give her some time outside the lab!
At least let her shoot somebody! :-)
