Monday Madness THE BIG LIE

Before the phrase became indelibly-associated with Don da Con's paranoid delusiona about the 2020 elections......
...it defined the paranoid delusions of the pre-QAnon nuts who inhabited the internet in the early 2000s about the events of 9/11/2001!
You can read excerpts from the the unverified tale
and buy the comic itself

Monday Mars Madness VANGUARD ILLUSTRATED "Be It What It Will, I'll Go To It Laughing"

A story's title based on a lesser-known line from Moby-Dick becomes appropriate...
...when you reach the last page of the story!
If you don't get the reference, Ray Bradbury penned the screenplay for the 1956 Moby Dick movie.
Written by David Campiti and illustrated by Tom Yeates, this never-reprinted story from Pacific Comics' Vanguard Illustrated #3 (1984) is a sincere tribute to Bradbury and other SF creators, though overwritten and a bit too "self-fanservice" for my taste.
The underappreciated Tom Yeates' superb artwork compensates for that, and makes reading it worthwhile.

Reading Room Redux ALIEN ENCOUNTERS "Outpost"

Because the printed copy of the story we presented a couple of days ago was so poor...
...we decided to re-present the never-reprinted tale using the original art!
Now that's a lot better, eh?
Note the art boards for pages 2 and 3 are from DC Comics.
The light blue (Cyan) guidelines were invisible to the film the printer used to create the negatives used for creating the printing plates!
However, in this case, the printer apparently over-exposed the film, causing a lot of the fine-line inking to be lost in the printed book!

Reading Room ALIEN ENCOUNTERS "Outpost"

From the original FantaCo 1981 b/w one-shot Alien Encounters...
...here's a never-reprinted tale featuring the most unexpected protaganist of all!
Didn't see that one coming, did ya?
Writer (and the book's editor) Larry Shell is one of those guys who've been around the business for decades. but few beyond the pros he interacted with know who he is!
As Larry himself explained...
I was former Director of Publications for the late, great Heroes World Distribution (the third largest comic book distributor in the country until its demise), where I edited and packaged their 250+ page monthly catalog, along with several specialty catalogs for 10 years.
My article, “How To Solicit In The Direct Market” was published in Comics Buyer’s Guide and served as a template for many small publishers for a number of years.
I have also done freelance marketing consulting for several small publishers.

I’ve been self-publishing sporadically since 1975 when I released a funny animal horror comic entitled, The Barn of Fear, whose contributors included such industry professionals as Doug Moench, Tom Sutton and Alfredo Alcala.
I also packaged a couple of other titles, 50s Funnies published by Kitchen Sink Press and the original Alien Encounters #1 published by Fantaco Enterprises. I later licensed the title to Eclipse Comics.
In the early 80s, in collaboration with Alcala, I contributed a story to Heavy Metal Magazine.
In the late 1980s, I formed Shel-Tone Publications, which published a number of trading card sets and a CD, the soundtrack to R.Crumb: The Musical
He's still around today, primarily as an original art dealer as seen HERE

Why DRACULA VS ZORRO?

In 1992, Topps Comics adapted the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula...
...illustrated by the movie's production illustrator and noted comic artist Mike (Hellboy) Mignola!
Both the movie and the adaptation, perhaps the most faithful version of a movie ever, were hits!
With vampires in general a hot commodity in movies, tv, novels, and comics, Topps quickly followed-up with several projects including...
...Dracula: Vlad the Impaler...
...The Frankenstein-Dracula War
(Note: Topps had also adapted the movie Mary Shelley's Frankenstein)...
and Dracula vs Zorro...
Topps had acquired the rights to Zorro and apparently thought a good way to re-introduce the character to the comics audience would be to tie-in with the trendy lord of vampires.
After all, the graphic novel Red Rain, featuring The Batman and Dracula had sold amazingly-well, and Batman was a similar "dark heroic" character to Zorro, so writer Don McGregor and artist Tom Yeates came up with a story that could fit into both characters' continuity with a minimum of fuss.
Both Dracula (in flashback), and his victim, Carmelita, would turn up in the Zorro series (which ran 12 issues) once more.
(We'll present that story next week.)
Carmelita would become a regular in the Zorro spin-off series Lady Rawhide.

Reading Room DRACULA VS ZORRO "When Titans Clash!"

...on a short voyage from Spain to France, Don Diego de la Vega and Count Vlad Dracula court the same lovely female fellow passenger.
When she abruptly rejects Diego's attentions (which she enjoyed and encouraged earlier), the playboy decides to play "guardian angel"...
To Be Continued...Next Friday!
By the way, here's how the cover for #1 actually appeared on the comic racks!
A matte-black cover with glossy-black embossed artwork and red/white highlights!
It looks really kool to the naked eye, but, as with most "enhanced" covers, it doesn't photograph well (much like vampires?)!
