Reading Room MARVEL PREVIEW "Man-Gods from Beyond the Stars" Part 1

Chariots of the Gods? was the primary inspiration for Jack Kirby's Eternals...
So let's look at a strip from the same era also inspired by Erich Von Daniken's concepts!
The story continues..Tuesday!
Written by Doug Moench, illustrated by Alex Nino.
Though largely discredited today, Von Daniken's books about "ancient astronauts" influenced pop culture from the 1970s to the present, including tv (BattleStar Galactica), movies (Prometheus and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull), and comics (Tragg and the Sky Gods)
The Eternals was originally called Return of the Gods and, like Mister Machine/Machine Man was intentionally not intended to be part of the Marvel Universe!
We'll go more into that next week...

Reading Room STAR*REACH "Why Viking Lander / Mars"

A very kool, never-reprinted adaptation of a Ray Bradbury poem...
...first performed by the legendary author at the 1976 San Diego Comic-Con the week after the Viking probe landed on Mars!
AFAIK, the poem's never been reprinted in any of the Bradbury anthologies, or anywhere else, for that matter!
It's only appearance was in Star*Reach #6 (1976), illustrated by absolutely beautiful art by Alex Nino!

Reading Room SPACE VOYAGERS "Four Faces of Death"

...but the Space Voyagers are still an amazing team of interstellar explorers making their "trippy" way through the universe!
Sadly, we won't find out what happened to the "twins", or the "real" Space Voyagers!
There were only five Space Voyagers tales by Robert Kanigher and Alex Nino, all of which saw print as backups in DC's short-lived 1970s title Rima the Jungle Girl...and none of which have ever been reprinted!
However, as of this post, we've re-presented the complete series on this blog and you can read them all just by clicking HERE!

Reading Room SPACE VOYAGERS "Queen Ant"

It's been a while since we looked in on the never-reprinted, psychedelic adventures of the Space Voyagers...
...but, if you have a phobia about insects, it may be the wrong time to check them out!
This kool Robert Kanigher-written, Alex Nino-illustrated tale from DC's Rima the Jungle Girl #5 (1974-75) is the quartet's final published appearance, but we still have one more stand-alone Space Voyagers tale to tell...coming soon!

Reading Room: Space Voyagers "Delta Brain"

...well, I guess that pretty well covers it.
Let's continue...
I don't think good 'ol James T Kirk could've handled that situation any better!
Scripted by Robert Kanigher, illustrated by Alex Nino, this never-reprinted tale from DC's Rima the Jungle Girl #2 (1974) showcases both the writer's and artist's storytelling strengths, demonstrating you can tell an effective tale in only two five-page segments.
It's an art that, sadly, seems to be lost to today's creators.

Reading Room: Space Voyagers "Four Tombs"

After too long a period, we rejoin the...
...as they continue their never-reprinted adventures from the 1970s!
Note the script credit for this tale from DC's Rima the Jungle Girl #1 (1974) is incorrect.
Robert Kanigher penned the story, not Jack Oleck.
The unmistakable art is by the underappreciated Alex Nino.

Reading Room WEIRDWORLD "Washed Ashore on WeirdWorld"

Now listen well as the writer/co-creator spins a tale...
...of how WeirdWorld came to be in this never-reprinted text story from Marvel Super Special #11 (1979)!
Be here tomorrow when "Warriors of the Shadow Realm" begins...

Reading Room WEIRDWORLD "Lord of Tyndall's Quest" Conclusion

(actually, it's easier if you read the first two tales HERE and HERE, then continue...)
Despite the book selling very well, Marvel didn't use WeirdWorld to leap into the mystical fantasy market for another year.
But. when they did, it was with a new art team and a new approach, both in terms of plot and illustration.
Before we continue with the story on Monday, you might want to familiarize yourself with the geography of WeirdWorld, courtesy of co-creator Doug Moench and new art team of John Buscema, Rudy Nebres, and Peter Ledger...

See you on Monday!
