Fifty Years Ago...the Final Frontier!

The Fall 1966 TV season was a landmark for TV sci-fi/fantasy!

There were at least two series every night in Prime Time (sometimes opposite each other, which in those pre-DVR days drove us NUTS)!

(NO Internet! NO YouTube! NO Streaming Video! NO DVD/Blu Rays! Not even VHS Tapes!)

But, every night, after dinner (and presuming you finished your homework)...

Spies!

Super-Heroes!

Comedies with monsters/witches/genies/time-traveling astronauts, etc!

Straight sci-fi with The Invaders, and three Irwin Allen series (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, and Time Tunnel!

And, of course, the greatest of all...

It was an amazing time to be eight years old!
Even though my family had two huge 13" TVs, both of them were b/w, so I didn't see all this stuff in color until the '70 when my dad finally got a color set!
(Some, like Captain Nice, I didn't see in color until VHS and DVD copies were available!)
But even in monochrome, those shows enthralled me.
So, tonite, I'm settling down in front of the tube (a 50-inch flat-screen) with my own mini-marathon of 50-year old sci-fi!
Batman "Shoot a Crooked Arrow" (which, technically, aired on Sept. 7) & "Walk the Straight and Narrow"
Star Trek "The Man Trap"
(Bewitched and Jericho [A spy series set in World War II Europe] also ran on Thursdays, but didn't begin their season until Sept 15th!)

Reading Room JUNGLE JIM "Wizard of Dark Mountain"

Dynamite isn't the first comic publisher to inject sci-fi/fantasy elements...

...into this usually "realistic" high adventure strip!

Written and laid-out by Bhob Stewart, pencilled by Steve Ditko, and inked by Wally Wood. this cover-featured story from Charlton's Jungle Jim #22 (1969) was prepared for the character's previous publisher, King Comics, but ended up at Charlton when King Features Syndicate dropped in-house comic book publishing.

Reading Room: STUART TAYLOR IN WEIRD STORIES OF THE SUPERNATURAL "Faustus"

Despite the title, the series is actually sci-fi about a time traveler and his machine...

...who occasionally run into mystical menaces.

IIRC, The Time Tunnel TV series did the same thing, encountering Merlin, the ghost of Nero, and others along with the usual silver-skinned Irwin Allen aliens...

This series started in Jumbo Comics #1 (1939) as Diary of Dr Hayward, illustrated by Jack Kirby under the house pseudonom "Curt Davis" (which was used for every story in the series).

With #5, Lou Fine assumed the art chores, and several issues later the title changed to Weird Stories of the Supernatural as lab assistant Stuart Taylor took center stage and old Doc Hayward became a supporting character.

(In fact, the series title sometimes listed "Stuart Taylor" above the "Weird Stories..." logo, playing up the action-hero aspect.)

As of 15, a rotating lineup of artists contributed art but no other "big names" worked on the series which continued for almost the entire run of Jumbo, ending at #140 (1950).

Our Newest RetroBlog--Secret Sanctum of Captain Video

We're proud to announce a new addition to the Atomic Kommie Comics™ family of RetroBlogs™.
Secret Sanctum of Captain Video™ will run weekly (or better) entries on classic sci-fi/fantasy movies, tv shows, and radio shows.
Besides offering background on the tv series or movies, we'll often present the comic adaptations of those presentations, many never reprinted since their initial release!

After the initial Captain Video tv show video and comic presentation we're running over the next couple of days, the Secret Sanctum will unspool the comic adaptation of George Pal's The Time Machine by Alex Toth as well as several related vids and a gallery of posters, including HTF foreign versions.
And, of course, links to books, dvds and other goodies related to the particular movie/tv show being presented.

NOTE: Comic book versions of movie or tv adaptations of already-existing comic or pulp properties will be shown at Hero and Heroine Histories™.
For example, the Doc Savage: the Man of Bronze 1975 movie tie-in (which is not included in the current trade paperback reprint from DC) is our main feature at H&HH next week, with The Shadow movie adaptation to follow early in June.
