Reading Room EERIE "Dracula" Part 4

Dracula has made Lucy Seward a vampire!
Dr Van Helsing arrives, too late to save the poor girl, but not too late to send her tormented soul to the afterlife by staking her thru the heart.
Now, his attention turns to her master...Count Dracula!
Though there were a number of Frankenstein tales in the Golden Age, including Dick Briefer's horror series, there were only a couple of appearances by our favorite vampire (usually a cameo) before this story in 1953!
The trend continued until the late 1960s when Dracula became a supporting character in the b/w Vampirella magazine.
In 1972, when the Comics Code was revised to allow vampires and other "traditional" monsters, the Count reappeared not only in short stories, but a long-running series from Marvel highlighted by moody art by Gene Colan.

Reading Room EERIE "Dracula!" Part 1

Did you know that Classics Illustrated did Frankenstein, but not Dracula?
However, there was an adaptation of the original Bram Stoker novel, published several years after the Classic Comics version of Mary Shelley's tale in the mid-1940s

It appeared in Avon Comics' Eerie #12 (1953), and was the only book-length story to appear in the title!
To the best of our knowledge, the story has never been reprinted, probably due to it's length.

What shall Johnathan Harker do?
Join us Thursday for the frightening answer!

Reading Room AMAZING DETECTIVE CASES "Ghost Story"

Here's a never-reprinted 1950s tale...

... that's both about law enforcement and justice from beyond the grave!

You may note the Joe Maneely-illustrated cover doesn't really match the Bill Everett-rendered tale from Atlas' Amazing Detective Cases #13 (1952)
There are several possible reasons for that.
1) the cover and interior art were done at two different points in time, sometimes months apart!
2) The cover artist didn't have copies of the interior pages as visual reference, only plot descriptions from the editor!
3) the cover was done before the interior art as a "springboard" and the actual writer/artist(s) made changes when they were creating the story!
All three of these reasons could (and did) apply to Atlas Comics' books if the story's artist didn't do the cover...as was the case most of the time!

Reading Room: WEIRD "Frankenstein: the Monster's Story"

Here's a one-off tale taking elements of several of the Frankenstein Monster's many incarnations...
...and combining them into a fascinating tale!
Written by the magazine's associate editor Roger Elwood and illustrated by it's editor/art director Carl Burgos (who created comics' first android hero, Timely's Golden Age Human Torch), this story from Eerie Publications' Weird V1N10 (1965) is one of the few stories (after Mary Shelly's original) that doesn't leave the door open for a sequel!
Trivia: despite the numbering, this is the first issue of the magazine!

Friday Fun BIG APPLE COMIX "Hi There! I'm Paranoia!"

As NYC's subways are shut down due to once in a quarter-century flooding (at least 7 inches of rain)...
...I fondly remember Big Apple Comix's back cover by Ralph Reese, personifying the response we New Yorkers tend to have to even the most outrageous occurrences!

Reading Room (JOURNEY INTO) UNKNOWN WORLDS "Prisoner of TIme!"

Here's a weird tale, even by the loose standards of 1950s comic book sci-fi...
...and, to top it off, thr tale is told by persons unknown!
Neither the writer nor artist(s) for this never-reprinted story from Atlas' Journey Into Unknown Worlds #36 (1950) have been conclusively identified, though some think longtime Atlas/Marvel production pro Sol Brodsky penciled it.
BTW, though it was numbered #36, it was actually #1 in the Journey into Unknown Worlds series!
