3-D: WHACK! "3-D-t's" Part 2

We began 3-D Week with the 3-D-t's and we end the week with them...

...but only two months after WHACK! #1 came out, things for the 3-D comic industry have not gone well at all!

How close was this story to the truth about the collapse of the 3-D comics phemonenon?

Remember, in the comic story, the names have been changed to protect the guilty!

Reversing roles from the previous 3-D-t's story, Joe Kubert penciled and Norman Maurer inked this story.

Who wrote it is unknown, but it could be either or both of them.

They also satirized those impressionable youngsters who wanted to do 3-D comics...

Wonder how many kids actually sent in a dollar...

The extensive use of Craftint for backgrounds, background objects, and shading is a clever idea, but I can see how it would become visually-irritating on an ongoing basis.
Art by Harry Lazarus, one of a trio of siblings (including Sid and Leon) who all ended up writing and/or illustrating comic books during the 1940s-1960s.
(They are not related to Mell Lazarus, writer/artist of the comic strips Miss Peach and Momma, who also worked in comic books in the 1950s.
Small world, ain't it?)

What did people in the comics industry think of the 1950s 3-D fad?

I'd say this 1953 tale from the all-3-D first issue of WHACK! (St John's MAD comic clone) explains it pretty well.

(And, yes, you need those 3-D glasses!)

Penciled by Norman Maurer, inked by Joe Kubert, the writer is unknown, though it could be Maurer.

Next issue, there was a non-3-D sequel story about the collapse of the 3-D comic trend.

3-D Controversy!

According to the LA Times...

The National Assn. of Theatre Owners, the country's largest group of exhibitors, has lashed out at Sony Pictures concerning its plans to stop footing the bill for 3-D glasses and pass the expense on to moviegoers!

Sony sent a letter to theater owners informing them that as of May 1, 2012, it will no longer pay 3-D technology companies such as RealD the average cost of 50 cents per ticket for 3-D glasses used by moviegoers. 

Sony has two big genre movies in 3-D coming out after May 1 next year: Men in Black III and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Fox tried a similar move, but was forced to back down after several theater chains threatened to take only 2-D versions of films.

NATO issued a statement that..."NATO believes Sony's suggestion is insensitive to our patrons, particularly in the midst of continuing economic distress..."

2011 Pop Culture 12-Month Calendars are HERE!

One of our favorite types of pop culture collectible here at the Atomic Kommie Comics™ offices are calendars, in particular the multi-page 12-month kind, with a different illustration for each month.

I have over a decade's worth of James Bond 007 movie poster calendars.
Each year the new one adorns the wall over my computer.
When the year is over, I cut it up and use the art the next year as mini-posters to decorate whatever vacation place I rent during the summer.
Besides 007, over the years, I've picked up, or been given, various Star Trek, Star Wars, DC, Marvel, and other licensed property calendars.
I've always enjoyed using them, and often thought of the person who gave them to me!

But, there are pop culture categories and subjects we've wanted in calendar form as presents for others (or for ourselves), but were never produced!
So, we decided to create them ourselves, using the wildest, rarest, kitchiest comic book, pulp magazine covers and movie posters we could find, each image digitally-restored and remastered from hi-rez scans of the original items, NO reprints or low-rez files! (Would we do that to you?)

While we've had a great response to our new line of 3-D Collectibles,  there have been several requests for a more...generic...version of the Bwana Devil 3-D Diagram.
Not wanting to alienate a potential customer base, we've done just that!
So, for one week, you can get your hot little hands on this especially-created version of the already-best-selling graphics we've seen on people's shirts and bags at IMAX Avatar showings!

Both our recent 3-D offerings have done well enough to warrant being held-over for a second week!
So...
As you may have noticed, we're in the midst of the third cycle of 3-D media, which, oddly enough, seem to occur in 30-year cycles!
(The first was in the early 1950s, the second in the early 1980s.)
With James Cameron's Avatar back in movie theatres this weekend, we thought, why not present a cover image from a 3-D book featuring a beautiful woman in a technologically-primitive, exotic jungle environment? It's what I'll be wearing to the movies this weekend!
OK, so she's not blue, and she's not Zoe Saldana, but hey, you work with what you've got!
(Sheena has appeared in pulps, several different comic book series, a feature film and two different tv series, so it's not like she has no name recognition...)
Besides t-shirts & hoodies, the art adorns messenger bags, mugs, and other tchochkies!
(BTW, the cover is also available as a spectacular limited-edition print!)
Sheena will be around for one more week. After that, she returns to the jungle, perhaps never to be seen again...

LOOK! It's 3-D Comics & Movies!

Captain 3-D did so well as a Design of the Week that not only are we giving him a regular spot at Atomic Kommie Comics™, but we've created an entire section just for vintage 3-D comics and movie posters where he'll reside!

With the revival (and improvement) of the 3-D process, we felt it was the right time to bring back the kitchy-kool graphics of the FIRST wave of 3-D to an appreciative pop-culture savvy audience (That's YOU, guys!)
Besides being available on t-shirts, mugs, and other tchochkies, we'll be offering TWO different 2011 12-Month Calendars, one each for comics and movie posters, in early September!
