Space Hero Saturdays THE SECRET ORIGIN ( NO LIE) OF FLASH GORDON!

Because it's Thanksgiving weekend, and we're out shopping...

..due to the Dreaded Deadline Doom, we're re-presenting a classic (but rarely-seen) Flash Gordon tale...
...the untold story of Flash Gordon's first encounter with the inhabitants of Mongo!

Wow!
Writer Mark Schultz and artist Al Williamson pulled off what many these days would consider to be impossible...a retcon that doesn't contradict any of the previous stories, nor requires a reboot of the character's entire history!
(I thought only Rascally Roy Thomas was capable of such a feat!)
Not only that, but it includes visual Easter Eggs relating to various past versions of Flash, including the Clay People from the second movie serial, Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars, spaceships from the 1930s serials and the 1979 animated series, Flash's father (named "Alex" after artist Alex Raymond) looking remarkably like Buster Crabbe (the actor who played Flash in all three serials), and a young Dr Zarkov based on Al Williamson himself!
You can read the entire mini-series from the start by clicking HERE!
It's well worth your time to do so!

Monday Maternity Madness CHOICES "Civilization as We Know It!!"

The male (not "men" by any standard) Republican mindset in a nutshell...
...and I do mean "nut"!
From Isis Press' Choices: a Pro-Choice Benefit Comic for the Anthology National Organization for Women, produced to raise money after the Supreme Court ruling of Webster V Reproductive Health Services (1989) began the re-imposition of limits to the rights of women over their own bodies!

Monday Maternity Madness CHOICES "Some Words From the Guys in Charge"

Want to bet all these characters are based on Republican politicians of the 1990s?

And, note that they are, of course, all males, if not "men" in any meaningful sense of the word, just like most Republican politicians then and now!
For the record, the late writer/artist Howard Cruse is a man.

Monday Maternity Madness CHOICES "People Like This Really Exist!"

It's sad and amazing how this strip from 1990 by writer/artist Nina Paley...

...is so relevant (and accurate) today!

Monday Maternity Madness MAD "Mad's All-Inclusive Do-It-Yourself Abortion Newspaper Story"

With minor updating, this never-reprinted two-page feature...
...written by long-time contributor Frank Jacobs from EC's MAD Magazine #324 (1994) could be used today!
Sad, isn't it?

Monday Maternity Madness CHOICES "Burning Issue"

The ruling made by the Supreme Court repealing Roe V Wade last week seems inevitable...
...when you are dealing with people who believe America should be like this!

Nope, this isn't America...yet!
But we're sure as Hell headed there as our own conservative religious fundamentalists start dominating the government!
From Isis Press' Choices: a Pro-Choice Benefit Comic for the Anthology National Organization for Women, produced to raise money after the Supreme Court ruling of Webster V Reproductive Health Services (1989) began the re-imposition of limits to the rights of women over their own bodies!
There will be more in the coming weeks!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder SPACE ACE "Yo, Bro!" Part 2

...I'll just add you'll discover why we titled this untitled tale as we did!
(It does make sense!
You'll see!)
See?
We told you the title made sense!
This was the first issue of a six-issue mini-series.
Unfortunately, publisher CrossGen went out of business after the third issue was published, leaving the story unfinished...in America!
With all six issues written and illustrated, first the series' Italian publisher Edizione Italy and then Canadian publisher Arcana eventually ran the entire storyline some years later!

Holiday Reading Room LIFE OF CHRIST: EASTER STORY "Resurrection"

Under this Scott McDaniel cover...
...is one of the most unusual tales Marvel Comics ever told!
(And that's saying a lot!)
Written by Louise Simonson, pencilled by Mary Wilshire and Colleen Doran, and inked by Bill Anderson, this 1993 one-shot, co-published by Thomas Nelson Publishers is a companion volume to The Christmas Story by the same creative team, published earlier that year.
Easter Story tells the tale from Christ's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to this final chapter, though we're running only the section taking place on Easter here.
If you'd like to buy a copy of the HTF comic, you can find it HERE.

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder SPACE ACE "Yo, Bro!" Part 1

This particular comic series was a sequel to a video game and its' short-lived TV series...
...continuing the plotline established in both!
To Be Continued...
Next Wednesday
Written by Robert (Walking Dead) Kirkman and illustrated by Paulo Borges, this opening chapter from CrossGen's Don Bluth Presents Space Ace #1(2003) shows a nice balance between comedy and drama.
CrossGen published almost 70 titles between 2000 and 2004.
Besides creator-owned properties, the company also did a number of licensed projects like this, including Bluth's other big video game Dragon's LairJohn Carpenter's Snake Plisskin, and Masters of the Universe!
