Space Force Saturdays SPACE BUSTERS "Victory on Valda"

Editor Jerry Siegel wanted Space Busters to look more like...
... the recently-revamped and revitalized Buck Rogers strip!
But artist Marvin Stein ended up using the original Buck strip as reference in his tryout, and lost the gig!
With a looming deadline, Siegel contacted the Buck Rogers strip's artist, Murphy Anderson (who had recently left the series) to provide redesigns...
...as well as the cover-featured story!
(Note: the cover is by Allen Anderson...no relation to Murphy!)

Personally, I'm not crazy about the purple-red color scheme, but at least it matches the uniform on the cover.

Friday Holiday Fun BARBIE "See You Later, Christmas Gator" Part 1: the Journey Begins

Ah, a universe where Santa Claus is real...
...that's my kind of place!
Written by Angelo DeCesare, penciled by Mario Capaldi, and inked by John Lucas, this never-reprinted tale from Marvel's Barbie #50 (1995) was typical of the kool flights of fancy the series specialized in.
Barbie, and its' sister title Barbie Fashion, were two secret success stories for Marvel in the 1990s.
Because they weren't superhero titles, hardcore, mostly male, fans never even noticed them, but the two books ran an impressive 63 and 53 issues respectively at a time when many Marvel titles lasted 12 issues...or less!

Holiday Reading Room SANTA CLAUS FUNNIES "Fir Tree"

Last year, we presented a religious-themed tale about the origin of Christmas trees...

...guest-starring the Christ Child Himself!
This one's a little more light-hearted!
Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, Walt (Pogo) Kelly both adapted the story and illustrated it for Dell's Santa Claus Funnies #1 (1942).

Lieutenant Kara Basuto of the Terran Interplanetary Corps follows criminal Ethan Dayak from star system to star system, always one step behind him.
Due to the huge distances, both of them go into suspended animation during the trips between planetfalls.
But the more time they spend in hibernation, the more their minds and bodies begin to alter...
