It was written and laid-out in the 1950s, but penciled and inked in the 1970s!

Scripted by Walter (The Shadow) Gibson and laid-out by Gene Fawcette back in 1952, the tale was fully-penciled and inked by Bill (Sub-Mariner) Everett for Skywald's b/w anthology Nightmare #2 (1971)!

Frankenstein in the Swinging Sixties: ZIK! THWOCK! ARRGH!

The story we showed you HERE was not the Frankenstein Monster's only 1960s comic appearance...

...though some would like to forget this version!

After publishing a very loose adaptation of Universal Pictures' 1931 movie (as seen HERE), Dell decided to ride the "Pop Art" wave and do superhero versions of the various Universal Monsters!

For whatever reason, Universal didn't approve of the concept, but Dell went ahead anyway, removing any visual or story reference to Universal's versions of the characters to avoid trademark and copyright conflicts, utilizing only elements from the original (public domain) novels.

The end results were...unique.

Reading Room: GRAPHIC SHOWCASE "Eyes of Mars" Intro & Parts 1-6

In the pre-Internet days...

...comic creator wanna-bes had to print samples of their work in "fanzines", then sell them at comic conventions and through mailing lists.

Here's the very first published efforts of a wanna-be who made good...

The Edgar Rice Burroughs-inspired creator of this story from CCCS's Graphic Showcase #1 (1967) is none other than Mike (The Shadow) Kaluta!

The strip was probably intended as weekly installments in a high-school/college paper, but was repurposed for use in the fanzine.

Graphic Showcase ran three issues, with "Eyes of Mars" appearing in all three.

Frankenstein Reading Room: WEIRD "Frankenstein: the Monster's Story"

Here's a one-off tale taking elements of several of the Monster's many incarnations...

...and combining them into a fascinating tale!

Written by the magazine's associate editor Roger Elwood and illustrated by it's editor/art director Carl Burgos (who created comics' first android hero, Timely's Golden Age Human Torch), this story from Eerie Publications' Weird V1N10 (1965) is one of the few stories (after Mary Shelly's original) that doesn't leave the door open for a sequel!

Trivia: despite the numbering, this is the first issue of the magazine!
