Reading Room STRANGE ADVENTURES "Radioactive Invasion of Earth!"

Remember when obsessed sci-fi toy collectors almost doomed the Earth...
...and only rock and roll music could save us?
No?
Good thing we're here to remind you...
Writer Gardner Fox was noted for his scientific accuracy and meticulously-plotted stories.
So why did he have scientists handling radioactive material without protective clothing or shielding?
Otherwise, this tale from DC's Strange Adventures #84 (1957) makes total, logical, sense!
Note: the story, penciled by Sid Greene and inked by Bernard Sachs has only been reprinted once, in Showcase Presents Strange Adventures Volume 2 (2013), and only in black and white!
Wonder why they're keeping it so well hidden?
Think about that next time you're ordering toys from Sideshow or some other vendor...and note if the toys give off a weird, unearthly glow...

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder YARS' REVENGE "Qotile Ultimatum"

When is a comic book not just a comic book?

When it's also a user's manual supplement explaining concepts behind a video game!
Bonus: Here's an illustration showing the positions of the planets in conflict in the game...
Writer Hope Shafer, and artists Frank Cirocco & Ray Garst created a simplified version of creator Howard Scott Warshaw's backstory for the game.
The mini-comic was included in the package with the game cartridge and actual manual.
Trivia: Yars' Revenge was the best-selling title of the entire Atari 2600 console's games line!

Reading Room MYSTERY IN SPACE "Singling"

A well-done graphic story can be understood without captions or word balloons...
...as this never-reprinted tale from DC's Mystery in Space #111 (1980) demonstrates!
Scripter Gerald J Brown penned only a few stories before disappearing from comics.
He was also a writer/editor of the prozine Night Voyages. which ran for 10 issues between 1977 and 1984.
This issue of Mystery in Space was the first issue of a revival of the legendary anthology which was cancelled in 1966.
Sadly, the book only lasted for seven issues before being cancelled again...

Monday Madness STRANGE TALES "Zzutak: the Thing that Shouldn't Exist!!" Part 1

It's interesting to note how many of these "writers/artists encountering madness" tales Jack Kirby drew.-

Considering how many stories, characters, and creatures he did create and co-create, was it simply...coincidence?
Since plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, penciler Jack Kirby, and inker Steve Ditko ended this chapter of the two-parter from Atlas' Strange Tales #88 (1961) at this point, we'll pause until next Monday before continuing!
